The Tjenneboom is a monumental tree on the Heerbaan (Romeinse Kassei) from Tongeren to Tienen. The tree is located between Voort and Helshoven, near Mettekoven, on the border of four (former) municipalities: Voort, Mettekoven, Gotem and Hoepertingen. It rises on a hill of 92 meters high: the highest point in this area, nowadays called Tjenne Hill.
Originally there was an old lime tree here. Under this tree, Johanna Machiels, nicknamed Tjenne, was sentenced to the stake in 1667, for alleged witchcraft, after a two-year trial. People accused her of bad deeds and saw in her the personification of dark forces. The verdict was executed at this place.
The tree had a circumference of 5.6 meters in 1888 and the crown had a diameter of 16 meters. At the end of the 19th century the lime died, and a poplar, which grew in the vicinity, became the second Tjenneboom. In the summer of 1945 this tree was hit and split by lightning. In 1960 the tree was burnt by the hands of young boys. On April 22, 1970, a third Tjenneboom, now a poplar, was planted and is still standing tall.... #tjenneboom#landscape#bluesky#sky#meadow#rural#ruralscene#rurallandscape#sunnyday#sunny#voort#mettekoven#gotem#tree#haspengouw#limburg#belgium#ilovelimburg#visitlimburg@visitborgloon@ilovelimburg@visitlimburg@toerismelimburg
