Day 7/365: Forgot to post yesterday, but I'm sure it's still Monday somewhere 😊
Took this when I went running yesterday. But sometimes the photograph just doesn't look as awesome as you think it would.
*turn on sound* The Santa Ana winds are blowing in Southern California, and like most things that have been around for eons there are legends that follow. The dry desert winds crash over the mountains and are said to bring a tense, uneasy mood along with them.
Neil Peart had, perhaps, one of the best takes on the Santa Ana phenomenon when he wrote, "Modern-day urban myths associate the Santa Anas with rising crime rates, freeway gun battles, wildfires, actors entering rehab, Hollywood couples divorcing and bad tempers all around." Joan Didion wrote about the Santa Anas in her essay, "Los Angeles Notebook" and made claims such as, "Surgeons are said to watch the wind, because blood does not clot normally during a foehn." (A foehn is a dry, down-slope wind). Also, "Some teachers do not attempt to conduct class during a Sanata Ana because the children become unmanageable." (As a former teacher in SoCal, I might concur with this one). Luckily the worst thing I saw today were power outages and some fallen tree branches, but it's nearly impossible to deny the frisson of electricity that runs through the air when the Santa Anas boom into town. Scroll through for some Santa Ana pop culture references.
I still remember when I was in an #interior history class back in college, she’s my favorite teacher and she asked the class “what is the #function of an #ornament?” I answered “It’s for the #heart” Honestly, I didn’t expect that she was going to say my answer was correct
Until now, the idea of ornaments is still for the heart. A mattress is to sleep on, to rest your whole body. Pillows are to rest your head and to hold. A blanket is to cover your body when you’re cold. A night stand is to put your books on, etc. A lampshade is to put the room in a warm #relaxing light before you go to #bed
But that over scale hand painted #wallfan, is an ornament. The painting style is Northern #Thai/ Chiang Mai style (the same with ornament pillows, they are embroidered by #NorthernThai#tribal#artists)
I was born in #Chiangmai but I moved to Bangkok since I was very young. I still feel some part of me is a Northern Thai girl even though I don’t quite really know my old #hometown as well as I should. Something about their #arts, make me feel so #warm and #cozy inside, and just really #happy, just like the #feeling of #home
