The U 96 was a submarine the Type VII C of the Navy of Nazi Germany. Built at the Germania shipyard in Kiel, she was commissioned in September 1940. She did 11 war voyages where she was responsible for the death of at least 1279 persons and the sinking of 28 vessels. In 1943, she became a school submarine for the Navy. She was destroyed by a air-raid in Wilhelmshaven on March the 30th 1945.
"Das Boot" became popular because of the fiction published by German author Lothar-Günther Buchheim in 1973. Buchheim had participated on a tour on the U 96 in 1941. He used his notes on that voyage and several others he did aboard other German submarines during World War II to write his story. Director Wolfgang Petersen made a very successful film based on the book in 1981. A TV series with the same name has recently been produced and will be released in a few days.
This impressive model of the U 96 in a scale of 1:33 is part of our exhibition on submarine warfare on deck 5 of the museum.
