Both of us are atheists, but I knew we could both admire the art and nature of what is simply known locally as “The Grotto”. Since religion is incredibly dramatic and morbid, its full name is National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother. It was constructed in 1924 using the usual nation-wide influx of donations after a friar put down a $3,000 deposit on land being sold by the railroad. What is basically an outdoor church covers 62 acres and the bottom and top of a 110 foot tall cliff.
They carved a cave out themselves to install the main display of The Grotto, featuring Mary holding the corpse of Jesus, and had an elevator installed against the cliff so people could (pay to) go up to the top and see their botanical garden. They have 23 statues registered by the Smithsonian Institute and everything is made of marble or bronze.
We gazed at everything with awe and disgust. Everything around us was beautiful, the way the intricate sculptures existed amongst the thick wooded areas, but represented a gross hoarding of resources on behalf of the church. I couldn’t stop thinking about how much untaxed money was spent building this display and how much it cost to keep it running. The elevator was out of order, but we did walk a short trail where the Stations of the Cross are depicted in three-dimensional bronze busts. We found two unopened cans of beer presumably stashed in some shrubbery next to the final crucifixion of Christ.
Earlier in the day, we were kicked out of a church parking lot that was spacious and largely unused, and for the rest of the day I couldn’t stop thinking about the massive amount of resources afforded the churches in this country, and how little of it is shared or used to genuinely help the masses. Going here was relaxing, but ultimately did not help those obsessive thoughts.
The middle of nowhere, just how I like it ✌🏼🇺🇸
Going to start looking at trips for 2019 soon, I like to have something to look forward to because let's face it, Christmas is just a massive let down isn't it?.
Movie Madness is a video rental store still alive and well in Portland. Their selection was massive and do worse enough to please just about anyone.
Their store is also a small museum with dozens of authentic pieces on display from famous films throughout history. We saw a mock building that was used in Blade Runner AND Ghostbusters, the bar of soap from the Fight Club promotional and cover art, an alien warhead from James Cameron’s Alien, one of the three ears created for David Lynch’s Blue Velvet, one of the mugwumps from Cronenberg’s Naked Lunch, an alien prop from Mars Attacks, outfits worn in Westside Story, pants worn by Frank Morgan in The Wizard of Oz, the bust used in Marvin’s death scene in Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, a skeleton from the opening of Wes Craven’s Wishmaster, one of the prior knives from Wes Craven’s Scream, and so much more. If I lived here, I’d totally get a membership.
Have you ever been in this place? If you don’t like crowds, the smell of marijuana and busy streets, it’s not for you. I hate busy places, but look at these houses. I really like this “Namaste” one, because there was the smell of incense sticks and lot of Buddhist and other stuffs which I love. This street has a lot to offer. You can buy whatever you want, get tattoo and try some food. Visit Camden Town when you are in London and try to get some hype. What do you guys recommend me to visit in London?
