Here are some of my creations from my first term back at pottery class. These little wildflower and bee bowls are on there way to the @shopatofs . They make a great gift for Christmas and there will be more coming soon to my @etsy shop.
here is a new version of the three colorant / equal parts color run video. .
this tests every possible combination of three colorants that you can make from a set of single oxide colored glazes. .
the row of glazes here are the same base glaze, each with a different colorant in them. each one is labeled with a letter: a, b, c, etc. Then, equal parts of three are systematically blended: abc, abd, abe, abf, abg. next acd, ace, acf, acg. and ade, adf, adg; aef, aeg; and afg. .
the results are a spectrum of subtle color shifts. you can really fine tune shades of colors when you cast this wide of a net. .
results with all combinations including copper were posted earlier this week. more to come!
manganese, so deep and rich, still takes on muted tones in a softer matte. these colorants are timeless. each one carries so much resonance from collective ceramic history. what do you think of when you see manganese?
one of the quad blends, striving for shades of sunset.

most of these recent posts of test tiles are the result of a kutztown university research grant this past summer. that grant supported a student researcher, @artbyderfer, who made countless tiles and performed endless test procedures. the glazes pictured are sixteen different base glazes, each with the same amount of a single oxide in them and fired to cone 6 in an electric kiln. the glazes have a variety of flux families and surface properties so that we could explore subtleties in color response and textural effects. it was a great experience to focus on this research, and i look forward to watching @artbyderfer apply these testing procedures to her own artwork now! this set is neodymium under halogen light.
