It's time for Meet an Employee! This week we are meeting Duncan, another Emergency Teacher for our Chubu head office!
1. Where are you originally from?
Well, I was born on the south coast of England, lived in London for a while, but spent most of my life in the town of Rugby in the middle of England (and yes, that is the place the sport of rugby comes from). 2. Where did you start off?
My first posting was to a branch school in Toyohashi, a city on the southeastern edge of Aichi prefecture, where I spent three years.
3. What does your job entail?
At its heart, the role of an emergency teacher isn’t so different from that of a branch school teacher – the focus of the job is still on delivering the best quality lessons to students while also supporting the business side of the company. The difference is in the “emergency” part of the job, which means I can find myself dispatched to a school at very short notice, to teach students I don’t know and with little opportunity for preparation. It is important to be flexible, to be willing to travel and to be able to think on ones feet. But the challenge is part of the fun.
4. What was your most interesting placement?
I spent a few months working at Takefu school in Fukui, which is the most rural part of Japan I have so far experienced. The emptiness took a bit of getting used to, but that part of Japan is incredibly beautiful.
5. What’s something interesting you’ve done while living in Japan?
I can only pick one thing? So, one Summer I went to Kakunodate in Akita and visited one of the samurai houses there. I was the only foreign visitor and the owner of the house took me to one side, served me tea and then brought out her photo albums and talked me through the history of her family. I am always humbled by just how hospitable Japanese people can be.
resolver as dificuldades.
