The next photo I’m sharing from the Vintage Fresno Collection is a press photo from @thefresnobee of Longfellow Junior High. The back of the photo reads “Jul 18 1966”. A newspaper clipping from the paper it was used in is attached, and reads “ABANDONED - After 50 years, the stately Longfellow Junior High School has been ordered closed because recent earthquakes, which were relatively mild and hardly noticed in the Fresno area, have made it unsafe”. Many historic buildings in Fresno were lost for this reason in the 50’s & 60’s, including our original courthouse in downtown. Often these historic buildings were deemed “unsafe” when ulterior motives were to blame. Longfellow Junior High School was located at 868 Hazelwood Blvd, built in 1915 & demolished in 1966. Today it is a ponding basin, and you can still see where the sidewalk led to the entrance of the school (shown in this photo).
