Community. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Keith Kisler of Finnriver several times over the years in Chimacum, San Francisco and the WSU Bread Lab in Burlington. As a fourth generation wheat farmer from Eastern Washington (Othello if memory serves) Keith is connected to both the grain and the cider economy. He’s a great guy to chat with (if he isn’t driving four hours to pour cider for a tent full of bakers or driving a tractor somewhere) and has done an absolutely remarkable job of building community with the many great folks of the Finnriver family including his lovely wife Crystie. If you don’t know Finnriver, or haven’t been to see them in Chimacum, you should probably take the next weekend to go visit! I don’t know if he makes bread but I know the cider is very good. #Chimacum#finnrivercidery#finnriver@wsufermentation@nwcider#craftcider#loveofland#grain-economy #buildingcommunity@patagoniaprovisions
When you arrive at a dear friend’s house after a long drive through the hot afternoon and they’ve prepared a beautiful dinner for your family and you find Finnriver on the shelf and a cozy refuge for the night - before setting off into the old growth woods without the internet for a few days...will be back on Friday friends! Thank you @aoborne! #finnriver
A significant boost to my Monday morning mood thanks to this magnificent cashew butter cookie from our neighbors at the @chimacumcorner Farmstand! Baked fresh in the commercial kitchen at Finnriver thanks to the @usdagov for their Rural Business Development program and our local North Olympic Development Council. And by golly this cookie was also solar powered thanks to @powertripenergy. Get ‘em at the Chimacum Corner Farmstand! #finnriver#chimacumcorner

The harvest begins! Enjoying the arrival of the first bin of locally grown Dolgo crab apples. The Dolgo is a favored crabapple brought from Siberia in the late 1800’s. Elongated, richly flavored fruit. Fermentation to come! #finnriver#cidermaker#dolgocrab#appleharvest

“Oh my God, what if you wake up some day, and you’re 65, or 75, and you never got your memoir or novel written; or you didn’t go swimming in warm pools and oceans all those years because your thighs were jiggly and you had a nice big comfortable tummy; or you were just so strung out on perfectionism and people-pleasing that you forgot to have a big juicy creative life, of imagination and radical silliness and staring off into space like when you were a kid? It’s going to break your heart. Don’t let this happen.” @annelamott 🖋🎨🎀✉️🥂🕯🙌🏼 When I look back on my life, I want to have spent time connecting with you, and your creative life.
Join me on Sunday for a creative time @finnriver 11am to 2pm. Link to tickets in profile. We are taking your mantra and calligraphing it for you to see everyday. Bring words that are special to you and we will make them even more beautiful.
Oh Earth! As a reader of science fiction I regularly encounter tales of space exploration wherein the intrepid interplanetary travelers end up on a planet where there is nothing to eat! I’m so grateful for this one...dear planet that grows cheese, cider, salmon. Love this earth so much. 🌍🍏💚 #finnriver#eatingonearth@mysterybayfarm#capeclearesalmon

Farms! Visiting a farm is more accessible than most think. It’s a great opportunity to get back in touch with nature and to learn more about the animals’ lives before they are sold as food. I purchased an awesome cooler bag this year so when I head on a road trip, long or short, I can always stop at a local farm to pick up a few special groceries (just ask for a little ice). I love supporting farmers and enjoy their labor of love. Have you tried farm fresh 🍳? They are so worth the extra few dollars!
“My music is what I call Mythopoetic Folk. It's original music in the wheelhouse of my mentors-in-absentia: Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Tom Waits with a little John Prine thrown in for good measure.” “Coming of age just in time to launch into the barrel of the ’60s, he majored in music, marched against the war, got expelled, hitchhiked to San Francisco, toured with rock bands, somehow obtained conscientious-objector status and, miraculously, survived...amid the sparse beauty of the Mojave Desert, today he lives in an isolated 480-square-foot cabin with his wife, two cats and a rescue Labrador retriever named Steinbeck.” .
“...the only poet to ever appear in Fine Homebuilding Magazine.” .

Wow, how did I forget how good it feels to do yoga? And doing it on the farm on a lovely summer evening was such a nourishing treat. Gratitude to yoga teacher Dana Nixon here for offering farm yoga - and for her honoring of the cultural origins of the practice and her celebration of loving kindness. Offered Tuesdays 6-7:30 at Finnriver. $12-$15 drop-in. Deep breaths of kindness and peace all around! #finnriver#farmyoga

Last summer I visited the PNW and fell in love with some delicious organic cider. This summer we had our 40th high school reunion. My friend brought a lovely assortment to our Lake cabin all the way from Washington state. 🙂 #finnriver

Spent most of the day in Port Townsend but had a really lovely time at #finnriver living that pnw cider life! I said I was coming out to Washington to drink all of the cider in the state and I am making excellent progress.
Today’s draft offerings, artfully portrayed thanks to @cougarmakesart! Three cheers to the @jumpplayground volunteers and supporters that showed up today to support construction of an accessible local playground at HJ Carroll Park. Spring swarm in the cherry tree over by the compost & equipment barn at the Orchard. They are honeybees from one of farmer Cameron & Laurie’s hives. Laurie put out bait hives with lemongrass oil to attract them back but they flew off to other adventures. Wishing them well and a sweet summer ahead! @bluepoppy1000#finnriver#honeybees

Crossed paths with Farmer Janet as she was delivering these fresh-picked beauties - organic tomatoes - to the Dented Buoy Pizza crew. It fills my heart (and my mouth) to meet a farmer carrying the fruit of their labor and the Earth’s bounty. Pizza served at Finnriver Thursdays & Fridays 4-8pm and Saturdays & Sunday’s 12-8pm (summer hours). Thanks for making our lives more delicious @janetaubin and @dentedbuoypizza! #finnriver#organicfarming#tomatoseason#woodfiredpizza

Growing organic spelt in the Chimacum Valley! Thanks to the breeding efforts of Dr. Kevin Murphy at WSU, Finnriver’s Keith Kisler gets to grow out this field to help supply more seed for the open source seed initiative. It’s called ‘Elwha River Winter Spelt’ and is possibly the only hull-less spelt around. Spelt, if you don’t know it, is an ancient whole grain related to wheat. We’ve always loved baking with spelt for its nutty and earthy flavors. And it’s beautiful to watch swaying in a summer field... #finnriver#elwhariverwinterspelt#organicspelt
