When kea are fed by people, they are not just at risk of getting sick or relying more on humans for food, they are also at risk of lead poisoning. Kea get lead poisoning indirectly when they spend more time around people. Once they have been fed a few times, these naturally inquisitive birds stay close to humans and look for new food sources, which includes pecking apart bits of cars. Some kea acquire a taste for lead by eating bits of the lead weights used to balance car tyres. They can’t get enough of the toxic metal and so they look for more. In the settlement of Arthur’s Pass (New Zealand), kea have been seen eating lead from the roofs of old houses (the metal was used for waterproofing). The DOC office in Arthur’s Pass has recently treated and saved two of these vulnerable birds from acute lead poisoning, while a third individual unfortunately died. If you are lucky enough to see a kea in New Zealand, please don’t feed it. #kea
This is Solo (T42), who is raising her current litter of 4 cubs. On my last drive of the trip, I found her sleeping right in the middle of the road. This picture is from my shortest trip to Bandhavgarh last winter in so many years.
I know it ain't much of a picture but today I found my 7th species of owl. A Saw Whet Owl! Man are they so small and cute. He was deep deep in a holy bush trying to get some sleep so I took this one shot and left him too it🦉🤗
Spent sunrise to sunset on the lake today with John & Hortensia Law and we had a great day with great company. Bluebird skies never make for the best days for wildlife photography but there was never a dull moment! Thank you both for a great day!
