Embryo development from fertilization to the blastocyst stage. Blastocyst stage: day 5-6 of development embryo with ~100 cells and differentiation between the inner cell mass (will become the baby) and outer cell mass (will become the placenta). Most embryo transfer procedures are done with blastocyst stage embryos. Most pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT) is done by biopsying ~5-10 cells from the outer cell mass. Testing includes looking for compatibility with life and sometimes more specific chromosomal and genetic abnormalities.
While healing from the egg retrieval procedure, my patients anxiously await these updates. These can often be difficult calls with complex questions regarding embryo development and more. Even more complex can be the difficult emotions and stress surrounding the fall in numbers and success of embryo development. This is a high stakes and high emotion time for many patients.
Not every egg will fertilize, not every fertilized egg will become a blastocyst, not every blastocyst will have the correct number of chromosomes (if genetically tested), and not every embryo will make a baby. The attrition in development can be devastating but can also be representative of what happens during natural conceptions in the body. 🥚
Brilliant idea! Just brilliant! I can’t believe I never thought of that myself!
So I was flipping through Facebook and saw this post by a local radio station it involved infertility. There was one comment that stood out and I’m surprised just the one. This young woman said, “Just adopt.” Just like that. Like it is such an easy and manageable thing. I responded *because I’m an asshole apparently* with something along the line sod how adoption is not THAT easy and infertility is something that each couple needs to figure out without people just trying to shove the “easy fix” of adoption at them. I explained that there is absolutely nothing wrong with a woman wanting to be pregnant and choosing adoption is something you just decide and then head down to the baby store to accomplish. She responded back with, “there are 100,000 children in foster care” and that it is selfish to do fertility treatments when children need placement. I don’t even know where to begin with that one. Adoption and foster care are two separate things and fostering does not guarantee you get a child. Either fostering nor adoption are easy fixes to a childless situation. I know lots of couples who have chosen adoption and their pain and suffering can be just as much as mine while choosing IVF and vice versa. If adoption was so easy this woman would do it herself. Stop shaming people struggling with infertility and stop diminishing couples who choose adoption by treating their choice like it was such a no brainer easy thing to accomplish. Each family is built in their own way and there is no shame in how we all choose to build ours. That’s my rant of the day. Hope everyone is having a great Friday!

Today's #fertilityfriday is the first of a series that will take a deep dive into the known causes of infertility. Although many assume that infertility is the "woman's problem" this graph busts that myth, by showing the actual percentages of infertility caused by male factor, female factor, or unknown/combination factors. Check it out to learn some facts that may surprise you!

S T A Y C U R I O U S
Even though you have been together for years, there is always something new to learn about sex. This weekend, surprise your partner and go where you have both never gone before.
Raise your hand if you are with me 🙋🏾
It's that time of year again..... 3 of my 4 boys have birthdays this next 4 weeks. Yeah we didn't do our family planning very well..... Maybe it something to do with both mine & Mr Bs birthday at the beginning March...... 😁
I'm super organised this year & with Fin & Ollie both having birthdays close together we've got them a joint present & joint birthday treat. I just hope they don't want to take their birthday gifts with them to the Cat cafe....... Rat's & cat's really don't mix 🐀 🙀
Kicking off this month's #NewFeministFriday ✨ "I chart my cycle to better understand my body’s natural function. It is empowering to be in tune with my body and to have the knowledge of when I am and am not fertile. Not only do I chart just for me, but I chart alongside my husband, for him, and for our future family. It is so important for me to chart because my cycles are not always consistent. When I have the benefit of comparing several months of charting, I am able to notice patterns to help me understand what phase my body is going through. Not only does it help to have a charting history, but it is helpful to look at my charts alongside my calendar, so that I can see what was going on during each month and pinpoint various moments of stressors which could have impacted a potential cycle’s irregularity. I had to try a few NFP methods before landing on the two that worked the best for me. I think the number one thing to know as you start looking into different methods is to ASK QUESTIONS! I talked to so many girlfriends about their experience with NFP and what I learned is that they were MORE than willing to share, and this turned out to be invaluable information for me which encouraged me to persevere during the start of my charting journey." - Susanna // 📸 : @flytographer
It can be intimidating to talk to your healthcare provider about your sexual health. Having open discussions with a provider you trust is crucial to your overall health. Not sure how to start the conversation? Here are some questions to help you get started:
⭐️1. I want to make sure that I’m taking all of the right steps to protect myself from sexually transmitted infections. Where should I start?
⭐️2. What are my options when it comes to birth control? How can I talk to my partner about birth control options?
⭐️3. Given what we’ve talked about in terms of my relationship history, should I be tested for STDs/STIs? Which ones?
⭐️4. I want to make sure that my partner and I get tested before we have sex. Where should I go? How can I bring up the topic with him/her?
⭐️5. I’ve been feeling differently about sex recently. Can we talk about what might be going on?
⭐️6. I’m not always happy with the way my partner treats me. Can we chat about that? -
When thinking about discussing your concerns or sexual problems with your healthcare provider, remember that they are there to help you. The things you want to talk about are almost certainly not new to them.
