The ancient temperate forest we call home stays green year-round, thanks in part to all the precipitation we receive (with rain roughly 203 days a year!). While the rest of the island is in full fall colour mode we have the joy of stumbling upon pockets of vibrant colours that remind us autumn is indeed underway and storm season is just around the corner.🍁
Finding solitude and tranquility in the wild 💙

It is imperative to stay safe when playing on or near water. Be prepared, wear a lifejacket or PFD (personal flotation device), don’t drink alcohol, and make sure you are familiar with your chosen activity. Familiarize yourself with #LeaveNoTrace principles and @bc_adventuresmart is a great resource to help you get informed before heading outdoors. #exploreBC#exploreCanada#explorevancouverisland#ExploreCowichan
🏆🌫🍺🌫🏆Early morning fog off Clover Point.
This is a solid representation of our head after last night’s impressive & infamous @bcbeerawards 🍻🍻🍻
Congrats to all the winners, our walloping hangover is there with ya...☕️
I'm almost certain that this is the same cub that I posted about a couple of weeks ago. We followed it and its mother as they foraged along the intertidal zone.
Although there's never a guarantee that we'll find cubs, the chance is increased by the size of a female black bear's home range. A male black bear would have an average home range - the area that a specific bear uses for food, water, breeding and shelter - of 25 to 150 square kilometres. A female's home range is much smaller, just 5 to 25 square kilometres.
This female has picked a fantastic home range. She obviously was able to breed in her range, as she has a cub. Water is obtainable through vegetation, and also, due to her home being in a rainforest she can find water within. Even through the drier days of summer, the fog banks bring moisture to the trees. In terms of food her range is ideal. Yesterday we watched these two eat crabs, barnacles and berries. There are grasses and insects available too. The last requirement for a good range is shelter. She managed to den successfully last year, as she emerged with cubs. My guess is she will have to move further from the edge of the forest to find larger trees to den in, or under.
We'll keep our eyes peeled through the last 10 days of the season to see if we catch another glimpse of this pair.
Have you seen this clip yet??The more we learn about orcas, the more we’re surprised by how much we don’t know about them! What an incredible encounter with an incomprehensibly incredible species ✨ 📷 This clip is from our good friend @gary_j27, please read below before you jump into the comment section:
I've been hesitant to share this video from last summer as I didn't want people to think that this is how close we get to whales. It's too amazing not to share though and I will preface it by saying that we were viewing them from a distance shut down as they were socializing and that's when, after a dive, T137B popped up right beside us and started interacting with the boat. Her sister, T137D was also below her. A very unusual and incredible encounter.
Disclaimer: This is extremely rare and if you are in a boat, you shouldn't try and approach whales this closely. This was a rare case where the whale approached us. Remember to maintain 200m distance when possible and, more importantly, watch your speed around the whales as noise created over 7 knots can be disruptive.
Also, ignore my ridiculous baby talk.
The best thing you can do to balance your time between work/business, hobbies, family and life is to find time for travel. Even if it only means trying a new park or hidden gem in your town.
It has been my experience that when I am stuck in one place too long without venturing out, I become cranky and unmotivated.
Exploring gives my mind time to recreate, relax and refresh. I even tend to find great ideas and solutions to my existing problems when traveling outside of my surroundings.
I know it may seem counterproductive, but trust me it works wonders so you are ready to return to work with renewed energy!
