The Government of Canada has updated their food guide for the first time in over 10 years.
And this time, for the first time ever!!, they have not consulted the food industry for their opinion, which eliminates recommendations based on the food industries bottom line!! Way to go Canada.
I would say it’s about time!! Canada has been using outdated science and information as a basis in giving it citizens some really terrible dietary advice.
With this new set of guidelines there has been many improvements. While it may not be 100% aligned with the newest and unbiased research, I still think it’s a step in the right direction.
Here are some highlights:
- water is the beverage of choice. No more recommendations for fruit juices or milk. WHAT A WIN!!
- vegetables and fruits make up most of the daily food recommendations. (I would say they would have been better off to recommend MOSTLY veggies with a few fruits mixed in)
- they have minimized the recommendations for dairy
-protein sources include both vegetable and meat (they put emphasis on you getting most your protein from vegetables, when I would say that a lot of the research recommends us getting good quality cuts of meat as our main source of protein)
-reducing overall sugar intake
-they still recommend eating whole-grains as part of a healthy diet, however they have said minimizing it to only a quarter of your daily food intake.
Lots of quality research indicates that whole grains or any grains in general are very inflammatory to the body. Eliminating or minimizing it to a little throughout the week is best. I would say one of the reasons for this is because they really can’t eliminate an entire food industry as billions of dollars of money would be lost. #health#functionalmedicine#functionalhealth#functionalhealthedmonton#canadafoodguide#foodcanada#canadafood#canadafoodie#yegfood#yegfoodie#yegeats#yeghealth#yeghealthyliving#edmontonfood#thrive#health#stepintherightdirection#foodismedicine#wheatfree#foodrecommendation#food#healthyeating#yeg
💗🦍🍕 Tried the very new @pinkgorillapizzeria for lunch this week and really loved my pizza! If there’s a dish on a menu that’s got the same name as the restaurant, I always like to order it (you usually won’t be disappointed)! 🤗 This was the The Pink Gorilla pizza with fresh pastrami, mustard, cornichon (pickles), garlic oil, swiss cheese, and pickled daikon. The flavours all worked so well together, the crust was crispy, there was great texture, and combined with a sweet donair sauce (you get one dipping sauce included with your ‘za), this was perfect. The pizzas here are pricier though ($23 for a 10inch regular) so I would recommend going with a few people, trying a few pizzas, and splitting the cost! You can also order takeout which is 25% off the usual price. Will return to try a few more pizzas 🍕 before I fully blog about it, but I do already really like it (I sort of knew I would because it’s from the same people who run the awesome @thelocalomnivore!) and it is a nice addition to the Parkallen neighbourhood. 💗 Hoping they find a way to do a Local Omnivore brunch pirate poutine pizza. 🤤

I always laugh because I think about transitioning to a low carb diet or even going Keto, and then realize I can’t go two days without eating noodles. Noodles are life. And the Pad Lao at @syphayrestaurant is one of my favourites. Mmm. 😍 #yeg#yegfood#exploreedmonton
JOEY / I've always loved @joeyrestaurants .. but now I love them even more because they have happy hour💃. -
Sadly the ahi tuna club didn't make it to the HH menu but that's okay, I'd order it regardless 😂 Overall, there's a good selection to choose from and the prices are pretty fair, I will 10/10 be back to indulge some more 📸: Seared salmon sushi & tuna poke bowl. #poke#sushi#joeyrestaurants#southcommonyeg

I heard about this restaurant on @cbcedmonton on Friday last week and it really peaked my interest! I lived in China for a year and I always long for fresh pulled noodles! Turns out it's around the corner from work so I checked it out for lunch today! This is the Beef Bone Soup with fresh pulled noodles! It's a huge bowl and gets more flavorful as you go! Also pictured is the shredded potatoes, there is a tons of garlic but it goes super well with the soup! Its China Town dining week this week so these two items plus a coke were 15$. She gave me the combo for lunch even though its just meant for the evenings!
Also seeing this on @ian_eats insta the other night also inspired me to go, and if you want to see some profesh pictures of this soup check out his account!

Today marks the start of the annual Law Show Boot Camp, the two-week struggle where participants in Law Show go from “I have no clue how this show will be any good” to “wow this is actually impressive and also the band is really talented”. It is an arduous experience where students are required to miss class and suffer in the name of making law puns to a paying audience. If the show is a recipe, the suffering of the next ten days is the MSG.
This year, I will be playing the prestigious role of Steve, a man who I am completely unqualified to portray and will likely just pick two character traits of and turn them up to eleven. If you’re wondering why Steve is in a play about Peter Pan, that’s a very good question. I don’t actually know either; I have yet to read the script past my own lines and lack any and all contextual basis for the things I do.
In commemoration of today, I am proud to announce I have already gotten a head’s start in dropping all my readings and school work. I am currently sitting in the reading room in the library making this post while everyone else around me actually attempts to do good in school (Hi Mikayla!). Seeing as how I chronicled my experience in Law Show last year with poutine, I will do the same this year, starting with this poutine from It Dog. It was salty as hell (like me) but also a great time (like me). It’s one of the better ones you can find in the University area if you don’t mind the walk to 109th.
Anyway, I just wanted to rant about Law Show. Carry On.
🇰🇷 NEW BLOG POST 🇰🇷 Went to a tasting event at @yeggangnam - #YEG’s Korean street food eatery that will be opening on Jan 24. Read to find out about what I ate - including a Korean style hot dog stuffed with cheese + more. Link in bio or mshangryfoodie.com!
Hello it’s me! I take so many photos with food that I figured I should start posting them on here 😂
Had a dessert party at the new @cacao70 location in @official_wem the other day! Love going here cause it’s always so yummy + super cute inside. My faves are any of their chocolate fondues and their upside down ice cream waffles.
Should I post more ‘me’ photos or keep it strictly to food?

Long days require some healthy eats for the road. Feeling grateful for all of you amazing people who continually support myself and Stacy and let us be a part of your busy lives with our meals!
We love what we do. There’s no better feeling then someone telling us they lost some more weight or they’re just feeling better from eating the right things.
Eating healthy doesn’t need to be boring and unaffordable. I promise we do our best everyday to make everything as easy as possible for you!
