This summer we want to introduce you to some rad folks that love the outdoors and are inspiring us to get outside more.
Our first story will have you wanting to get up and go on an adventure with your parents pronto. He is a selfless, hardworking, older brother that was born in Ecuador & raised in Georgia. Here is his story:
“My name is Marco Cando (he/him). I became interested in the outdoors after my parents started taking me on trips anywhere they could find. Since they didn’t speak the best English, most of the trips were local and not extravagant. When we could, we’d go on bike rides through random trails and runs at any park they could find. I remember hating every bike trail, every run, every hill because they were always a struggle for me. I would fall easily or I was never able to keep up with them. I hated doing anything outdoors because I didn’t feel adequate to go on “aventuras”, as my parents would call them.
It wasn’t until I started playing soccer that I started enjoying the outdoors. I found myself playing soccer every day and soon, I became a workout nut. All I wanted to do was go for a run, go biking, go to the park or do anything that involved being out in the open air. By the time I graduated HS, soccer was over so I tried new activities that I hadn’t before. I started running obstacle course races. So far, I’ve run 3 races.
The first race I ran was the most memorable experience I’ve ever had. I ran it with my dad who, in recent years, hadn’t been able to go out on “aventuras”. For the first time in years, my dad and I were doing something we enjoyed doing together. We ran the entire course wearing our Ecuador jerseys proudly and pushing each other at each obstacle. He knew I could’ve blown by him and finished the course faster, but that wasn’t the point. The point was that we were running the course together. It was a unique experience that I cherish. Since then, I’ve built a strong belief on experiencing the outdoors with as many people as I can. I’ve created my tightest friendships by connecting through hikes and going on waterfall hunts.”
We all have different ways of enjoying the outdoors. What’s your favorite outdoor activity?
