Olivier Dubois-Cherrier’s sculpture featured in the Arizona Biennial 2018, “Esthetic of Decay #11,” juxtaposes the skeleton of a saguaro cactus with a block of concrete. Dubois-Cherrier describes his work as “a philosophical inquiry of the main components of our experience of life as human beings, which are comprised of birth (creation), permanent move toward growth, and decay until inexorable death (physical disappearance).” His art is a means of “distinguishing between durability (the time of the cosmos) and conceptual time (given by our clocks and calendars) with the hope that it will help me live more harmoniously within myself and to understand what it is to be alive and human as I continue to age…in this inevitable process of decay.”
The Arizona Biennial 2018 features 85 works of art created by 70 Arizona-based artists. The work in the exhibition was selected by guest juror, Rebecca R. Hart, curator of Modern and Contemporary art at the Denver Art Museum. The Arizona Biennial will be on view through September 16, 2018.

I may have left Tucson but my phone is filled with thousands of Tucson pictures and memories that I am going to share with this new #TucsonTuesday series I'm starting up. I know this won't help me miss it less than I already do, but missing Tucson feels good as well ❤️🌵❤️ Have you ever made a connection with a place - a deep and meaningful bond, like the place was your friend, your companion? Have you ever noticed the beauty in a place the way you would in a partner or a best friend? I fell for Tucson hard the moment I came here, and this city - the plants and animals, the mountains, the washes, the art, the streets, every little quirk that is unique to this corner of the world, all of it, was my companion through some of the most difficult years of my life. I struggled with depression and loneliness, health problems that took years to get some explanation on, immigration woes, being far away from my partner, my family, my friends, and generally doing a degree that I had no previous academic background in, and this was only a portion of the stuff overwhelming me. But when I'd look outside my windows at the hummingbirds and the sunsets, take a walk and search for beautiful lizards and insects, hear birds like verdins and Gila woodpeckers all day long and look for them, or simply watch a beautiful Saguaro cast its shadows or the blooming Palo Verde put on a show, for a moment, all of those storms inside me subsided, everything was good, I was fortunate to be alive and in this beautiful place. The Tucson monsoons would do a beautiful job of mimicking my internal storms, and when it would rain in this magnificent place, I would feel all that pressure, stress, anxiety, frustration, ease just for a moment, I waited for those moments like anyone from Tucson waits for the rains.
Tucson changed me, and I've taken a big piece of it with me. I may have physically left, but Tucson will always be a big part of who I am, and with #TucsonTuesdays, it will stay alive on my Instagram account as well for many months to come!!! Here, I have some fun street art from downtown, the Catalinas and cityscape, some pictures from Mt. Lemmon, and a beautiful Tucson monsoon sunset.
