South Island trip day 9: Kaikoura
WHALES AND DOLPHINS!!!! Had a great time at the whale watch. Saw two sperm whales but seeing two big pods of both Hector dolphins and the rare Maui dolphins was a highlight. Also cruises past the seal colony and saw many seal pups playing in the surf.
❌🐬❌ It’s hard to understand why travelling dolphin shows can continue and allow dolphins being driven around the country to entertain people, often schoolchildren who are forced to go to the shows as the school teachers receive a sum of money if they bring the students to watch. It’s a very dirty game they play! The former minister of forestry made this statement, declaring the shows illegal. Yet the shows still go on?! Is there any hope for Indonesian dolphins in 2019, will these horror shows come to and end? #stopsirkuslumba#dolphins#dolphincruelty#dolphinshows#republicindonesia#animalwelfare#wildlifeconservation#exploitation
I can't quite believe how amazing our first full day on the boat has been. During our breakfast we spotted some dolphins in the distance so we headed over and swam with hundreds of them. Then we headed over to a different reef hoping to find eagle rays and turtles. We found both! And of course loads of other beautiful fish and coral. We have now headed out fishing hoping to catch something for tea. (We do have plenty of food if unsuccessful). Looking to more days like this.
Photos are mainly screenshots from the video footage thanks to @therizzix. And don't forget to check out the videos at the end which show the dolphins, turtle and eagle ray.
Another amazing day swimming in a bay surrounded by wild spinner dolphins. Dolphins use clicks and whistles to communicate and visualise their surroundings. In this video you can hear them, but you can also hear the noisy boats. Boats are known to disrupt aquatic wildlife as it makes it difficult for the animals to use sounds effectively. This problem is still poorly understood but potentially had a much greater impact then we realise. #dolphins#spinnerdolphins#maldives#comococoaisland
Spotted dolphins take huge leaps to rid themselves of remora (suckerfish). If you zoom in to just above the belly you can see one holding on.
