Featured Saint: SANTA CATALINA DE SENA
Doctor of the Churh, Virgin, Mystic
Acclaimed as the greatest light of the Dominican Third Order, she was born at Siena, Italy in 1347. At the age of 17, she received the habit of the Mantelate and increasingly experienced visions of Christ, the Virgin Mary and the Saints. She cared for the ill in hospitals.
She is popular for the many miracles and mystical experiences attributed to her, including the Mystical Espousal to Christ, this culminated in her reception of the Stigmata in 1375, invisible during her lifetime but clearly apparent at the time of her death. Catherine was also able to bring peace to hearts, to cities, to the Republic of Italy and to the Church. She went to Avignon, and while there persuaded Pope Gregory XI to return the papacy to Rome in 1376. Pope Paul VI declared her and Saint Teresa of Avila Doctors of the Church in 1970.
