AGNI - In Ayurveda the digestive fire, agni is at the root of all disease. Low burning fire results in undigested food and a slow metabolism. This is typical of kapha dosha. Excessively high Agni is when pitta is aggravated, this results in ‘burning’ of food, effectively not allowing time for nutrient absorption. Vata tends to have a low digestive fire, prone to fluctuations. Having low Agni means avoiding cold, raw foods and sticking to well cooked, nourishing meals.
Maintaining a strong Agni means a healthy digestion, optimal nutrient absorption and adequate elimination of waste. Boost your digestive fire with a cup of warm water and fresh grated ginger before eating!
If you have high Agni ensure eating pitta balancing foods, which are cooling. Avoid foods with salty, pungent and sour tastes.
It’s my mission to be a resource to expat women struggling with their health and wellbeing while living abroad, and today I want to tell you why.
6 Years ago, from the moment I stepped off of the airplane at #incheonairport, my tummy was upset with me. I paid this little mind because I was so excited for my new adventure of #teachingEnglish to Korean kids. I figured my tummy would adjust to the new flavors and ingredients in #Koreanfood. I really liked it, after all.
Well, with the introduction of a lot of things my stomach wasn’t used to like sticky rice, fermented vegetables, soju and spicy sauces, my digestion did not improve. .
Other symptoms began to emerge as well: heavy fatigue, #weightgain (20 lbs), terrible #pms (that lasted 2.5 weeks/month), a cyst in my breast, #insomnia, widespread #bodypain and crippling #depression & #anxiety. These things did not come all at once, it was like dominos. #Digestion fell first, then tile by tile the rest began to fall too.
I came to #Korea when I was 27. By the time I was 31 I had not slept a full night for two years, I was rapidly gaining weight, my breasts were constantly tender and I had forgotten what it felt like to not be bloated. I was very sick.
This affected every aspect of my life. When I looked in the mirror, I didn’t recognize myself as the young woman that I was. I felt I was looking at a wilted flower. I knew that I was on a path to degenerative and irreversible disease. I had to make a change fast.
First I went to some doctors. I went to the best hospital in Korea, Seoul National University Hospital. The doctor was very nice and actually listened to me. After many tests, he diagnosed me with #fibromaylagia, but he could offer nothing to treat the cause of my condition. I wasn’t ready to resign myself to a life of pain medication, so I dug deeper.
Later I went to a local hospital in #Daejeon where I saw an endocrinologist who tested my hormones and thyroid. He told me that I had borderline hypothyroidism. He wanted to wait 3 months and test again. When I told him about my weight gain, insomnia and pms, he didn’t have any suggestions. (Continued below)

If you have autoimmune disorder, you have an underlying issue with leaky gut. Autism, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's, Colitis, IBD, hasmimoto's thyroiditis, psoriasis, etc, all have leaky gut in common.
What is #leakygut? Just what it sounds like--increased intestinal permeability or simply holes in your gut. With holes in your gut, undigested proteins and toxins pass directly into your blood stream causing an autoimmune response. This is an INTELLIGENT response from the body, not an immune system that has gone haywire.
80% of your #immunesystem lies in the gut, making it the biggest immune system organ. If your gut is damaged, your whole system is damaged.
What damages the gut? This is a short list, but major contributors.
▶Compromised nervous system
Check my post on the parasympathetic & sympathetic #nervoussystem. In short, if you're always in fight, flight or freeze mode (stressed out) instead of rest, digest, repair mode, blood & nerve supply shuts down to the gut and pulls away energy from proper digestion. Improperly digested foods can lead to leaky gut. Constantly being in a sympathetic dominant state can also leave your damaged gut out of healing mode.
Antibiotics destroy gut flora. See my post on #antibiotics. In short, think of your gut like an ecosystem with the perfect balance of bacteria & everything you need. Think of it like a rainforest living in perfect harmony. Now hit this forest with napalm. This is what happens to your gut. The napalm is the sulfur compounds in antibiotics. They're very acidic & damaging to your inner ecosystem.
Where else do you get antibiotics? Animal products. 80% of the US supply of antibiotics goes into animal agriculture. These get into the food supply and into your body. Do your best to avoid these. If you've never eliminated them from your diet, give it a try. You have everything to gain. Open new doorways & unexplored possibilities to your life!

BE MINDFUL OF WHAT AND HOW YOU EAT.
As @benperformancecoach would teach us, digestion starts when you look and smell (your senses) something that looks delicious, nutritious and palatable. Ever run into the kitchen because the parents are cooking something you are familiar with. This means the digestive processes have already started and you just got a major dose of hunger.
I have taken up the idea that I have to be more conscious of where, how and why I eat. The difference between someone who is bigger versus someone who is thinner falls under a few general subjects.
1️⃣Be mindful of WHAT you are eating! Look at your food, don’t eat with one hand while the other hand is on the mobile phone. Eating is a social aspect of our culture we have forgotten.
2️⃣WHERE you eat in the house is important! This was brought up to me during the @musclenerds_health “When It’s Not About Food” Seminar. I was asked where I ate, my answer was on the couch in front of the TV so perhaps to better connect with the food I eat I should move my meals to the dinner table with the TV off instead over to my Metaphorical Island of social introvertedness (it may not be a word)
3️⃣HOW you eat is important! The art of Mastication. Chew your food a minimum of 20 times of until the food is Semi-liquid. This increases surface area of the food and allows efficient breakdown by your digestive enzymes. In other words makes the food easily absorbable by the body.
Some other tips:
- Set a time limit (20mins before all food is eaten)
- Take your time, your food isn’t going to go anywhere.
- Put your phone away.
- Turn the TV off.
- Put your fork down between meals.
- Minimum 20 chews of your food each piece of food.
- Eat at the Dinner Table.
- Eat with Family and Friends.
- Converse between your bites of food.
- Cook your Food (Avoid Uber Eats or takeaway, Saves money and you enjoy food more)
A trait of a thin person or a person who is better at absorbing food is someone who eats in the above manner, it’s certainly something I’ve noticed about how I ate in the past versus how I eat now.
Most of all enjoy the food you eat!
