Duomo di Siracusa is quite stunning with its original origins as a Greek Temple that was built by the Normans in the Middle Ages and dedicated to Athena. It eventually was converted to a Christian church and experienced many other incarnations due to its changing rulers. The Duomo is another UNESCO protected site in Ortigia.

I can’t believe that I’m staying within steps of the most ancient temple in Sicily. The Temple of Apollo is UNESCO designated protected site and was built in the beginning of 6th century. It’s quite a glorious structure.

The island of Ortigia is the oldest part of Siracusa and, walking from one end to the other, is less than 1km. Ortigia means quail because it’s apparently is shaped like one.

I wasn’t sure where to stay in Sicily until I read all the glowing enthusiasm for Ortigia. I am already charmed.

Ran away from Malta’s rain to Siracusa, Sicily. Picked the island of Ortigia to spend almost a week here. Back in Italy’s soil and the weather is looking good.

Bye, Malta. You’ve been swell except for the rain & the insufferable humidity that made me sweat uncontrollably & untamed my hair. Onwards to Sicily.

The Three Cities are older than Valletta, there’s Birgu, Senglea, & Cospicua. Birgu has existed since the Middle Ages, whereas the others were founded by the Order of St. John after the 16th century. It’s a nice few hours visit from Valletta Port.

Church ceilings are probably my favourite but you have to crank your neck.

Mdina, the “silent city”, with its high walls and labyrinth of alleys shelters you from the sounds of outside Malta. This is where the Apostle St. Paul was believed to have resided after his shipwreck.

Mdina, Malta’s original fortified capital city from the 8th century B.C., is also known as Città Vecchia. It’s feels like I’m transported back into another time & place.

Valletta feels luxurious but yet not alienating and there’s historical significance everywhere you walk in this walled city capital of Malta.

Escape to Malta for a few days to avoid the rain in Italy & much of Europe. Staying on the smaller island of Gozo. Gozo is a bit more traditional than Malta. Here’s the lovely city centre of Vittorija & St. George’s Square.

Cathedral of Saint Sabinus in Bari was one of the few things that wowed me. Bari’s Old Town is huge. I was supposed to spend the morning exploring Bari before my late departure to Malta but it was torrential rain & I ended up just seeking shelter. So perhaps I didn’t do Bari justice but I wasn’t too impressed with Bari.
10 2089:47 PM Oct 29, 2018
Spent the night in Bari before my flight to Malta to escape the rain in Italy. Bari felt so big & noisy after spending several weeks in smaller cities/towns so it was a bit of a rude awakening. Bari is the second largest city in the south next to Naples.

I didn’t want anyone else to know about this grotto about 15 mins from Grotto Piana. The water is way calmer & it’s a much more relaxing watering hole to spend the day. Shhh...

Hey, I hit 1K! 🎉
It goes up & down so I thought I’ll grab this moment when it’s over 1K to say thanks for following along & the kind comments. I hope it’s not all bots but mostly human. Can I quit my job now? Just kidding... it’s all fleeting, live your life & keep moving.

Monopoli is super quaint despite its small size but it packs a punch.

I actually quite enjoy exploring whilst much of the city is at lunch/napping.
