[What is front light? 🔦]
“There’s a fitting irony to the fact that the most obvious lighting pattern is one of the least utilized. A big part of understanding front light is understanding how to avoid it and it’s disadvantages…
While directly blasting a scene with tons of soft front light can be an effective way of getting to exposure is is rarely the most narratively appropriate or flattering. Direct front light removes nearly all shadows from the face of the subject. This sacrifices the DP’s primary means of shaping the face. If the actor doesn’t already have a great jawline, they will look worse in front light. This is especially bad for guys. It adds weights, decreases definition and has a subtle effehminizing effect…
A frequent situation where you may need to fight front light, is when shooting with a window at your back. You get all this free light, but it makes the talent blend in with the wallpaper. When i find myself in such a spot, I have the actor’s turn 25-45 degrees to shift that front light into a three-quarters side. The result is that the actor pops back out from the scenery..” (see @reflexcinemaus recent posts for full commentary)

As Decoy winemaker, Tyson is committed to crafting balanced wines that express their full charm and complexity while showcasing the varietal.
