I've always liked churches because time stands still here. There's no one chasing you away, no loud noises, no one giving you glares because you're there. Just you and silence, some sparrows occasionally.
Mont Saint Michel started as a small church for the nearby community (Avranches) in year 709, and the abbey and monasteries were added and expanded in the 11th-13th centuries - this place is OLD y’all. In the 14th century, a fortress was built around the entire village to protect it from a 30 year siege during the 100 Year War, then the abbey later served as a prison during the French Revolution. Needless to say, much restoration has occurred since then, but most of Mont Saint Michel remains original, and each nook and cranny (there are lots - we spent 6 hours there and didn’t even see half of it!) tells a story. Since the 1960s it has resumed its religious duties. So much beautiful architecture, and the acoustics. What I wouldn’t give to hear an evensong service here 😍
The devil smothered the rotting building as though not to damage it but simply to protect it for his own forth comings.

• M O N T . S T . M I C H E L • I had high expectations for this one, but it far exceeded them! The Abbey was by far one of the most intricate and regal cathedrals I’ve ever see despite the fact that in many ways, it was more simplistic than most. Pictures do little justice to the beauty and details in every corner. The woodwork and stone structures were exquisitely designed and so beautifully preserved, and the rooms kept going on and on and on. If you EVER go to France, I highly recommend making a stop to see this beautiful little fortress village on an island. So much breathtaking history!
