Staying wild doesn't mean I bite. It just means I know when to bite in order to protect the creatures and people who make this composite world so perfect. In one of my recent stops across Africa, I worked with chili pepper farmers in developing safe methods to protect themselves against elephant conflict (either from physical trauma or from destroying their crops). Being that elephants highly dislike this respiratory irritant, causing them to back away from the farmers crops keeping both parties safe from one another. There are a few ways to use the chili peppers but in Murchison Falls, Uganda we did it by: 1) Making chili pepper blocks (out of dung- oh, yeah, down and dirty, indeed) that are then burned; 2) rubbing chili peppers mixed with oil onto ropes surrounding villages/farms. Any oil honestly works- the point is to make it stick. The farmers also shoot their rifles into the air to frighten the elephants, as many of them know from experience what those guns have done to them in the past (and sadly the present)... #nature#vet#veterinarian#veterinarymedicine#dentist#dentistry#lovelife#love#passion#saveanimals#chimpanzee#chimpanzeesofinstagram#elephants#elephants#protect#health#healthlife
Chancey was rescued from inside a cardboard box where we found her rocking back and forth, with atrophied legs and her head full of fluid. We thought she would die or at a minimum be forever impacted, limiting her ability to freely live and play with the other chimps.
Seeing her now using a cardboard box, once a prison for her, as a simple plaything is such a joy! 💖
Here’s a story with pictures and video of Chance when she was confiscated published by @thedodo:
