I haven’t had much to post recently. Plus, I’ve been deleting all social media from my phone during the day. It’s been so great not to have that distraction. Right now, I’m working on my first portrait commission in years. Back in jr. high and high school, portrait drawings were my favorite, however, I just can’t get into this one. People may find portraits more impressive, but copying a photograph just for the sake of having it look like the photograph is just kind of boring to me these days. Hopefully I can get out of this rut, finish the drawing and get back to doing the things that I’d rather be doing. Happy Thanksgiving week! 🍁
I didn’t go outside yesterday because I felt so congested and exhausted. But today I plan to go for a walk. As John Burroughs said, “I go to nature to be soothed and healed, and to have my senses put in order.”
I played with some charcoal pens in the @procreate app to add texture. What do you think? It may not be noticeable on a small screen.
Day 31/100 This drawing is part of my 7th 100-day project: this time I’m drawing hygge for 100 days with the @procreate app. Some of my drawings are available as prints or printables in my shop, go to thehandcraftedstory.com or follow the links in my profile.

Details from a special house portrait I got to do for a friend. This beautiful flowering tree was fun to do (botanist friends - is this a crape myrtle??) #details#juliepaintshomes#landscape

Captured a few landscapes in Boschendal in South Africa.one of most beautiful places I’ve ever been. Our morning views were stunning. Haven’t worked with watercolor in awhile. #boschendal#southafrica#landscape
Today’s my birthday and I’m gonna do my best to celebrate like these two. 😉 It was fun to create this painting of the most dynamic duo in hockey! I’m feeling extra grateful and thankful for all of you today. Thank you for following along and supporting me in what I love to do! ❤️ [🎶: Xie] @capitals#ALLCAPS
I heard the greatest news...the government of Alberta has proclaimed that January is now the "Month of the Artist" and is starting the first provincial Artist in Residence program. Huge gratitude to our Minister of Culture & Tourism @_ricardoyyc and to @air106.1fm for sharing this conversation. To read more see my blog (link in bio).
Here I am, almost 3 months postpartum and I still haven’t touched any of my pre-baby weaving projects. To my fellow weaving mama’s, props to you for finding time to work and care for your babies! When I do have a free moment (usually during nap time) I’m in the shower, hooked up to my @spectrababyusa pump, or attempting to clean my house. I’m hoping to get back to weaving in January after my husband’s leave ends and we’ve returned from our Christmas trip to the west coast.
PAD-57 Post apocalyptic Dick follows the story of Dick who happens to be having a bad day. In fact, the whole world just ended. It’s in the same universe as How to kill a vampire but it’s a few hundred years in the past. There will be lots of fun and of course zombies!!!

In my mind, studio space is sacred space; a place where thoughts and ideas and passions are exchanged - a place where peace and quiet and joy drown out all of the other noise. My painting practice is deeply meditative and reflective. The repetition of painting the circles over and over is convincingly poetic and therapeutic!
Until recently I was never one of those moms that could effectively invite my kids into the studio. I found myself completely distracted! But recently, my 10yo daughter has chosen to join me. And without having to explain it to her, she gets it. She'll quietly work away on her own special project and every once in a while will say something like, 'I love it in here, Mama. I love just working away with you in here.' Now I know that relationally, she's all about quality time, but I've discovered that there's something more going on. I think she's enjoying the overflow of my joy. I think she's soaking up the same peace and quiet and drinking it all in because the beauty of this sacred space is something she needs too. We all need spaces like this! •
So cheers to all you Mamas and painters and creatives out there who bravely share your sacred spaces and #carveouttimeforart with others. It's a gift that keeps on giving! This photo, taken in my Vancouver studio, highlights my most recent collection of paintings before they were shipped to Calgary for their debut @gibsonfineart in a solo show entitled, 'More'. #sacredspace#artistmama#artisttakeovercotfa
