But underlying that idea of Canada is the promise that we all have a chance to build a better life for ourselves and our children. ~ Justin Trudeau

"Oh Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brilliants exploits!
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada we stand on gaurd for thee
O Canada, we stand on gaurd for thee!!!!"
This song sings in the heart of every canadian every day! It is played at sporting events, school day starts, events right across this great country and anywhere worldwide as our national anthem! Every canadian (if able) stands whenever it is played or sung, however there is no law stating when to play the anthem or behave during the anthem. It is a matter of respect and tradition.
Why talk about this today on June 24 instead of July 1st you ask?!
Well.... I'm glad you did!
The first time our national anthem was performed was on June 24, 1880 at a Saint Jean Baptiste Day Banquet in Québec City. It was originally a French Canadian patriotic song. The lyrics were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier and the music was composed by Calixa Lavallee.
Today there are two official versions - one in French and one in English. There is also one unofficial bilingual version, which is the one I used above. Interestingly, the french and english versions are notably different if you translate them. After much deliberation, versions, revising, and many years later, the National Anthem Act, which specifies the lyrics and tune for Oh Canada and designates the song as public domain, was officially passed in 1980 making this our official national anthem.
Since then, a few changes have been made to the lyrics but the spirit and love for our country and our national anthem still remains the same!
