Where we left it all this year. Thank you to everyone who came out to a show, bought our music, or supported us in any way. We couldn't do it without you. Here's to an exciting, music filled 2019! 🔘 #bywayof
#BYWAYOF 2019 HAPPY NEW YEAR 🎊// Planning two sessions of #BETTERBusiness with this woman @abbypendergrast and @corysarg in January and March. Want to get your financial sh*t together? We have some wonderful advisors to help in a safe space where every question is valid and helpful for everyone else in the room. More info coming soon!
Also if you need an interior designer in your life, hire Abby. My husband and I are working on a playlist and mood board for her for the feel we want for our house, she’s working within our budget and was helpful in letting us know what she could accomplish within that dollar framework. She’s talented and unique and has such a phenomenal eye.
#BYWAYOF 2018 // When @laura_m_herrera shared her story with @carmenchan and I the day we interviewed and photographed her, she said losing the city council race she had run for was the best thing that had happened to her in terms of her career. She now serves people regardless of party or side with the Voting Solutions for All People team at @lacountyrrcc, and her story has sat with me since then. What “losses” could be wins? What plan thwarted or challenge met may be for the better? And through these times what stronger, better, wider service will those perceived losses bring about? So thankful for the year that 2018 was, so excited for all that we have planned for 2019.
#BYWAYOF#GOODMORNINGS with Soho House with my partner/real one/New Yorker in LA @chelseaprobably. Started a year and a half ago to create a safe space to talk about real needs. STILL BEAMING from our last session on gratitude with @drdeepikachopra and executive coach @janetleewood. We are planning for more educational events for entrepreneurial women in Jan, Feb and March. Email me at [email protected] if you want to know about them!
#BYWAYOF@laura_m_herrera photographed by @carmenchan // Laura is literally changing how we #vote in 2020. She is on the Voting Solutions for All People (VSAP) team which is a part of the @lacountyrrcc. Running for office or a seat doesn’t have to be something reserved for a certain age or race. As we’re beginning to see through amazing women like @ocasio2018. As a #HuntingtonPark native, Laura told us about the time she ran for her own city council position, how she didn’t win her race, but how it was the best thing that could’ve happened because now with the LA county clerk recorder registrar, she serves a wider community regardless of party affiliation. Love her story, her heart and CANNOT WAIT to share her story with you.

#BYWAYOF Jane Tsang, Director of Care, photographed by @jatecson // What does care look like for you during the holidays? During lots of time with family or maybe friends who have become family, with expectations you place on yourself or what expectations others place on you. When Jane spoke with me and @margueritebb, she said sometimes care is joining people, sitting with people in their grief and in their challenges (versus solving or offering solutions). I’m remembering I need to practice being kind to myself and kind to others this season to prep and extend that kindness into 2019. (Hard when you are a natural born hater and fully competitive of everyone and even yourself, I’m working on it.)
Solo section from a new single that @bywayof_music will be releasing in 2019. Cant wait to show everyone what John and I have been cookin up for y'all⠀⠀

#BYWAYOF@figsunderwear by @scarlettrosepatterson, shot by @carmenchan 🌸 feminine and clearly considered lingerie through and for the female gaze (not the male). The product is beautifully made, but Scarlett’s process and story is even more impressive. Especially with the commentary around the VS show and then with the commentary around Third Love’s paid ad in the Times. I can’t help but root for the smaller local brand, not the influencer brand, not the brand that constantly targets me in feed, but the brand whose story and founder I know and can run into in my own city. Cannot wait to share her story for our third print issue.
#BYWAYOF Jane Tsang, Director of Care, photographed by @jatecson // Jane is one of my very best friend’s sister. She is also the Director of Care at her church. It’s her full time job. With @margueritebb, we all talked about the sessions she’s put together for those in leadership at her church, topics like “Power and Privilege,” and how it’s helped uncover blind spots for some. Growing up Korean-American and in a church setting, I asked if this position was unique, and why more churches don’t have it and how much healthier churches could be if they had a certified and trained Director of Care. She had a lot of answers but also met us in our questioning as well, knowing that it doesn’t dissolve problems or hurts but that her role can help. And not only those who are hurting but those she’s training to also serve those who are hurting. Can’t wait to share this interview with you all. Also wanted to say that around this holiday time, check in with yourself, your friends, other creatives, it can be a great month for some or a daunting one for others, not feeling adequate or like enough has been accomplished with the looming new year and new resolutions and goals to get after. Pray, meditate, run, whatever it is that you do to feel more you and more comforted, would encourage you to take a minute to remember those things and to do them!

#BYWAYOF@figsunderwear by @scarlettrosepatterson photographed by @carmenchan // I think this interview has been one of my favorites so far. Scarlett is so warm and funny and beautiful but her vulnerability and honesty about her life, her loss and her creation with her brand were brave and open. Also FIGS is a year old and they’re offering 20% off using FIGSISONE! So looking forward to publishing this interview in our next print issue BY WAY OF LA.
#BYWAYOF City Beach // Pretty Perth-ect. This city, this country! Kindness and cleanliness and beauty all around.

#BYWAYOF@somedaycoffeeco in #Perth // We kept asking what the food is like is Australia and friends at home kept describing it as “fresh” and “beautiful.” And they were right! Also an americano is called a “long black.” Makes sense if you think about just espresso with water. Also the Canadian-owner’s mother in law recommended a book called Mistakes Were Made, But Not by Me by two social psychologists (after she asked me about how we’re doing with Trump which is when I told her how embarrassing it is to be American right now).
#BYWAYOF@gfnk of @shoplcd shot by @e_h_ // Geraldine taught me the term “single-founder.” And I feel like it is such an apt and better description than just “founder” or “entrepreneur.” How many of us identify with that versus the current descriptors that exist?
#BYWAYOF@jeannettehlee photographed by @cobra24 // educator and lover of social justice. I had never considered teaching as a means of social justice until interviewing Jeannette. Her heart for her students and fellow teachers expresses that love as she works day in and day out, sometimes when it’s in the small things like lessons, and other times talking about harder things like the current climate of our country and world. Excited to share her story for our next issue, BY WAY OF LA.
Herbal Medication! Come see @smokey_lew throw down Friday night @curtainclubdallas in Deep Ellum! 2 free tickets still available! Go check my feed and comment on that post!

I've always thought it was funny how when asked, "If you could change one thing about yourself what would it be?" People's immediate answers tend to be so one dimensional. They wanna change their weight, height, face, etc. No one ever says they wanna change their insides though. I’ve never heard anyone answer with: "I'd change my inner demons." "I would be more experienced and well traveled." "I would make my heart kinder and increase my tolerance." "I'd have called my mom more." "I would change the world I live in." It’s pathetic how limitedly we, myself included, can see ourselves and our situations at times. How we've all been unconsciously conditioned to think that a physical change would impact our lives more dramatically than an emotional or mental one. News flash 14-year-old me, if you were skinny you'd still hate yourself. And news flash for current me, if you were 400lbs you'd still love yourself. Everything we say, do, feel, and become has layers of complexity floating along with it. Forget “If you could change one thing” because in all honestly, you can change any number of things at any given moment of your life if you’re conscious enough. And if you're like I was, and how I still am, looking for answers, they all come from within. Flowers grow from inside seeds. Babies from inside mothers. Connect with yourself. You already know. #health#transformation#weightloss#beforeandafter#mma#fitness#happiness -
