I suppose, it is time to explain my perspective on the Black Dahlia Murder 1947.
There are ways to interpret the decomposition of Elizabeth Short. Her surgically opened mouth suggests the archaic image of misogyny – the devouring mouth of Lamia and Lilith. Therefore woman’s zipped mouth means survival. (Hello Kitty is the antithesis of the Black Dahlia – she has no mouth as she is so well-loved for it.) In this case, Short’s “face” literally sealed her fate.
There were around 500 men who came to the LAPD to admit themselves to be the murderer of Elizabeth Short. This can be served as the rinsing effect within the culture of Christian society then. People felt so collectively tainted that they felt the need to confess the sin they did not commit but share the same motive of doing it.
However, I chose to shroud exactly everything popular culture is eager to unveil – her dismantled remains. I wanted to tape her mouth, put her remains within a giant urn, and surround her with thorns so no one can approach her.
My “Black Dahlia” depicts a state of powerlessness, unwanted confinement and the wretched condition of being mercilessly abused by some people, some circumstance and some force that is detrimental to your existence. You have no chance to fight back as you are tied, transfixed, disembodied within this excruciating form of physical/sexual/emotional violence. Your soul can be sad, angry and shattered as you should be if you were the Black Dahlia.
