The city is situated at the southwest tip of Sarawak on the northwestern part of Borneo Island.
The population of Kuching division (4,559.5 km²/1,760.4 mile²) was 705,546 (2010), with a density of 150/km² (400/mile²). Kuching has tropical rainforest climate and receives plenty of rainfall. The average rainfall is 4,200 mm (170 in) per annum.
The temperature ranges from 19 °C (66 °F) to 36 °C (97 °F) but the average temperature is around 23 °C (73 °F) in the early hours to around 33°C (91°F) noon.
The wettest times are in the months of November to February and the driest months are June through August.
