The CrossFit Workshop: Be Your Own Bodyguard™ is a single-day, immersive course designed to improve physical self-defense, situational awareness, verbal de-escalation skills and fear management. Through a mixture of classroom discussion and innovative partner drills, participants leave the workshop with simple, practical but effective self-defense skills.
Created by Coach Tony Blauer—a pioneer of modern self-defense and champion of the CrossFit community—the workshop leverages the SPEAR™ concept, which is based on human physiology and natural biomechanics. The “startle-flinch response” is part of the human survival reflex, and attendees learn to harness it as a catalyst for protective movement.
The CrossFit Workshop: Be Your Own Bodyguard teaches participants:
How to develop better situational awareness.
The importance of fear in life.
How to recognize “real” danger from “imagined.”
How to manage fear in a crisis.
“Biologically hard-wired” physical self-defense skills.
“Human Weapon” system principles.
SPEAR™ system fundamentals.
Brunch date with my munchkin. Had to discuss business and life details with the future mogul....over a grande Peppermint Mocha Frappuccino of course! Live and love life!
Their Bodies their Rules 👊🏻👊🏻 Raising a child brings with it many challenges, worries and out right panic 😅. We want them to be happy, successful.......but none of that matters if they arent safe.
One of the most important tools we can give them is too understand body autonomy. What that means is that they control their body and personal space!! Not their parents, coaches, priests, family members, NO ONE BUT THEM!! They need to know that NO ONE has the right to touch them or speak to them in manner that makes them uncomfortable or threatened. Predators prey on the kindness and the respectful manners children have been raised with and use it against them.
The reality is that a child is more likely to be abused or hurt by someone they know and trust. Wishing it away or pretending it cant happen is ignorance.
I made a promise to my students I will never lie to you, never betray your trust, and sometimes we are going to have to talk about uncomfortable things to keep you safe and I will never apologize for it.
Parents you should do the same 🙏🏼
We train to break people down should we be touched by the fickle finger of fate; what if you are on the other side of the coin and you need to heal someone instead? “You see it's not the blood you spill that gets you what you want. It's the blood you share, your family, your friendships, your community. These are the most valuable things a man could have.” #beyourownbodyguard#mymedic
An eagle flew right over me this morning . He’s in the tree but a little far to see. Practicing the deadly scarf form. As dangerous as any sword in the right hands. This is why I wear them, not because my neck gets cold. #beyourownbodyguard
❌BIG WEAPON/BIG TARGET❌
Simpler, safer = more secure.
In 1980 I had a big idea: I wanted to make the world safer.
After some violent encounters that didn’t pan out like in the movies, I rethought the process. My vision was that we needed to look at how humans moved. That means both the good guy and especially the bad guy.
This reframe changed everything, because traditionally, arts & systems focus on the ‘self’, the perfection and execution of technique.
I reversed this. “Be a good bad-guy” became our motto. I designed a scenario-based system.
I focused on using natural instinctive movement, hardwired reflexes and intuition. Another requirement for all training was that anything & everything we practiced must be based on credible threats and realistic scenarios.
Over the years I studied many martial systems (and still do), but I noticed early on that complex motor skills can be, well, complex. And more importantly, outside of combat sports and competition, we rarely saw what was practiced in training applied during violent encounters. In fact, we often saw the opposite.
This puzzle consumed me. For decades.
So to help make good humans safer, I designed a self-defense program around human physiology, physics and psychology.
🔺The real merit of a system is it’s transferability. If only the originator can do it, it’s value to others is severely limited. It made me proud, grateful & very satisfied to watch two of my coaches (Danny Tamblyn/Dan Shaw) captivate over 100 people from all over the world and then get them doing these drills.
Early in the 80’s I coined this phrase: “Behaviorally inspired/Genetically wired”. It was the filter for all drills. In reality, it’s real life that shows us what’s really needed.
