Showing off some of my beautiful plants that i grow in my balcony, some i planted from seedlings and so proud to see them grow and bear fruits hehe i have a few indoor plants too! 🌱💚 #swipe to see ☺️ So funny how my hibiscus consistently blooms and always leaves at least one flower; i repotted this together with my roses which blooms continuously also! 🌺🌹 I also have #bellpepper which this morning is so red and ready to be harvested! and it has new flowers also meaning more fruits to come! 🥰 Next up is my #calamansi which us very hardy and low maintenance, it started out with that one fruit but with regular caring and after transfering to this bigger pot, now has new fresh stems and LOTS of tiny calamansi which i cant wait for it grow bigger! I also have #Okra, #mint, #basil, #parsley, #sage, #taragon and #stevia 🥰 I am still waiting for my tomatoes to grow and of course my rosemary that is a challenge to take care of but its doing very well now! as a matter of fact, i used it a lot of times already for my G&Ts and for cooking 💚 Actually i think thats the best part of it, when you get to you use what you planted and cared of straight to #janinaskitchen 😍 I didnt expect myself to get into this so much but somehow its really therapeutic and relaxing! and yes, its sparks joy! haha! 💚🌱 Are you also a #plantparent share some of your babies please! and tips are also welcome 🥰 #containergardeningph#containergardeningmnl#containergardeningideas#greenthumb#janinasgarden#plantmommy#gardeningwithjanina
My thanks to the team @warragulfarmersmarket for having me jump on their Instagram this morning! We did some fun videos and stories as we met the most wonderful group of creative, dedicated, farmers/artisans. People really are SO talented and amazing! 😘🌸 Everything we saw, tasted, touched and ate was the result of people working hard and creating businesses with products based on authenticity, passion and integrity. I so admire everyone’s efforts! 🍅🥬🍏🍓 Please do take a minute to meet some fabulous people that I chatted with. I know you’ll enjoy their stories. 🌽🥕🍓🥖🧀🐝 Now it’s time for me to take a break from a very busy week with a glass of wine and an afternoon appetiser. A classic bruschetta is an ideal choice. Based on deliciously plump, red and REAL tomatoes, along just picked basil and garlic from @thrivingfoodsfarm this is the perfect plate of food for a quiet Saturday afternoon in summer. Enjoy. Big, beautiful, bodacious Basil🌿 Continuing our celebration of love herbs, tis time to wax poetic about Basil—a symbol of love in Italy❤️ Though, in ancient times, the Greeks viewed it with hatred…so…uhm…well, it’s Valentine’s Day…we’re siding with love on this one😉
My favorite thing about growing Basil is its aromatics. One sniff & complete bliss✨ Did you know that there are over 150 different varieties of this tender annual? Each with its own unique scent & taste. Cooking-wise, Genovese (or Italian-leaf) types prove to be most popular, but exploring different basils like Cinnamon, Holy, Opal, Lemon & Spicy Globe is where all the fun is at. Grown together, they make for a striking garden display of different colors, textures & heights.
Bee kind🐝 Plant some extra to let go to flower for your pollinator pals to nosh on. Oh, and you can nosh on them too! Just remember, the herb’s leaves bitter after flowering as a result of the plant signaling to go to seed, stopping production of its essential oil…where all the yumminess hides.
Nutrion-wise, Basil is chock full of vitamins A, B6, K & C, along with mineral like, calcium, iron, magnesium & manganese. Its health benefits include: easing stress, aiding digestion, boosting metabolism, mellowing headaches & soothing coughs.
It’s even a natural insect repellent! It’s even been said it’s toxic to mosquitos…they’re practically our state insect here in Maine, so I grow LOTS of Basil…lots! When I’m being pestered in the garden, I just crumple some leaves & rub them on my clothes. But, when I get myself organized, I quickly make up a batch of homemade insect repellent…I’ll share that recipe soon!
Do tell…what’s your favorite kind of Basil to grow?💚
Beguiling Basil🌿 Let’s chat all things growing & preserving your Basil! Yes, we’re getting that wild tonight…it is Friday after all😃
* Tender annual…even the lightest frost can blacken the leaves
* Plant in full sun in well-drained, moist soil
* If you live in a hot climate, Basil could benefit from mulching to help keep soil moist
* Basil loves a good 1.5” of water a week
* Easy to start from seed: * Sow indoors 6 weeks before last frost. Transplant once a the soil has warmed up to around 65º-70ºF. I usually plant out at the same time as my tomatoes * Direct sow once the soil warms up * Succession sow every 2-3 weeks for continuous harvests
* Allow for good air circulation by providing 12” spacing between plants
* Pinch back to encourage bushier plants
* Try to water from below, as watering from above can spread disease
* Avoid fertiziling…it negatively affects the flavor of the leaves
* Companion plant with tomatoes & lettuce…improves flavor of both
Basil is best used fresh. If you’re basket overflows, then you can also freeze your harvest. Drying isn’t really recommended as much of its flavor is lost.
To freeze— • My favorite way is to layer whole basil leafs in an air tight container, giving a light sprinkle of salt in between layers, & covering with olive oil. Then, store jar in freezer. The basil-infused oil is a delicious side product • Blanch for a few seconds in boiling water. This preserves the color. Squeeze dry and freeze • Flash-freeze whole on the stem, then seal in an airtight container & store in the freezer
To dry—Pinch off leaves & dry in dehydrator on low setting. Normally, I prefer to air dry my herbs, but basil is an exception as it doesn’t air dry well
Tomorrow, we’ll dish on Basil on last time…perhaps I’ll dish on a dish😂 Until then, cheers to a warm & wonderful Friday night💚
Buona sera a tutti!
