Book #25/2018 🎪🎭🚣♀️⏳🎩
"Caraval" by Stephanie Garber
⭐⭐⭐⭐ This was a yummy book.
Wildly imaginative, and vividly painted.
It kind of had an, Alice in Wonderland meets Hunger Games vibe to me. (spoiler alert!) I love LOVED the magical dress that changed all the time and all the other intricate magical elements on the Caraval island.
I quite enjoyed the ominous tone throughout the book, but I guess where it lost a star for me is, I felt like we spent the entire book with the protagonist so OBSESSEDwith finding her lascivious younger sister, that she just never enjoys the fact she has come to the place she has dreamed of coming her entire life.
I would have like to see her enjoy the shops, the magic...ANYTHING for at least a second or two before things got so grim. I felt like the few snippets of the more beautiful magic of Caraval we were given were always tinged with darkness.
I actually had the exact same feeling reading this book as I did when watching the movie "The Prestige". You can't feel relaxed at the show because you know something ghastly will happen any second--but then perhaps that is exactly what the author was going for.
At any rate, I still devoured it! I love that angsty, YA romance when it's done right, and I was certainly swooning all over Julian and Dante even though I didn't trust either of them.
So all in all, a juicy, fresh read for YA fans! (Side note, the shoes in the photo were my wedding shoes 👠👰! I still love them all these years later in all their silky extravagant glory, which I felt suited the theme of the book perfectly)

Book review time: The Death of Truth by Michiko Kakutani is basically a long essay about how we came to be fucked / how, beginning with postmodern irony, a culture developed that was/is derisive of earnestness, that accepts deception as an inevitability, and that looks for evidence in unqualified opinion, emotion, individual experience, a gist of a feeling of a tone, and a multiplicity of perspectives rather than in facts. The point of the essay is really that Trump was inevitable and that his appointment and character uphold the status quo of what we have been living in for the last half a century or more. For me, the narration was a little less engaging than I’d like, and I would have enjoyed a longer book that went deeper into the history and cited more examples, but I’m really glad I read it and thought it a thoroughly compelling argument. (Thought Peter Conrad’s review in Guardian/Observer naïve at best, snotty at worst. The idea that Brexit has nothing to do with Trump—he implies British Brexiteers aren’t racist like Trump; they’re simply “nostalgic fantasists”—and that Trump is so stupid all we need to do to solve the problem of him is ridicule him, is a fantastic and somewhat helpful display of the snobbery of an elite that didn’t predict Brexit/Trump and has no idea what to do about either of them, yet remains thoroughly assured of their own intellectual superiority. And thank goodness! Because it seems to be really, really important to their sense of identity and self-worth.) I think someone needs to point out to Conrad that there are all kinds of intelligence, and one of them is sitting in the White House, a metre or two away from fiddling with the nuke buttons. So check this essay out and feel free to recommend me other books on similar topics. Note: it is necessary to get through quickly so as not to fall into malaise and start fear-mongering your nearest and dearest about the Third World War (as I did). Also, required reading for everybody about to vote in the mid-terms.

Tells me to
But I am
What it is
like to bloom,
As a sunflower
I'll take up space,
I'll bloom behind my mother's eyes
And in my father's smile.
I'll bloom on the gift that is motherhood.
And no matter how many shadows
You try to throw on my way,
I'll cross them all.
I'll bloom like the sun
Does In between clouds.
