🌠 Dr. Clayborne Carson invited me to open the 90th anniversary of #MartinLutherKing, Jr.'s birth for the King Institute at Stanford University. 🌠1000 people in attendance at the sublime Memorial Church. 🌠I performed Dr. King’s favorite hymn “Precious Lord” on my gold flute and gave a some remarks. 🌠After me, my friend, the amazing Clarence B. Jones spoke. Clarence (now 88) lawyer, speechwriter & close friend of Martin Luther King, Jr. 🌠Next up folksinger Joan Baez (who marched with King). 🌠Finally a sermon by the Reverend Dr. William J. Barber II. The theme of the evening was named after King’s book: “Where Do We Go From Here?” The Rev. Dr. Barber serves as the President of Repairers of the Breach, focused on how our society treats the poor, women, LGBTQ people, children, workers, immigrants, #communitiesofcolor, the elderly and the sick. Drawing on the unfinished work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1967/68 #PoorPeoplesCampaign, which called for a 'revolution of values.’
Today is our 5th anniversary! CAST board member @joshsimon_eastbay shares, “I will never forget the day when NCCLF presented the CAST concept to the Rainin board. They asked us to step out of the room for a few minutes and, when we returned, asked if we could implement it with a $5 million grant...From this surprising moment has grown an amazing team doing groundbreaking work. It is a privilege to be part of this team!”
In celebration of #MLKDay2019, Hybrid Vision Creative Enterprises, LLC will feature a creative entrepreneur who epitomomizes the #kinglegacy by using passion for the arts to help advance the needs of communities.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Minister, Author, Civil Right’s Activist, and Visionary will endure as the face of equality and justice for all people. His work and life represents the epitome of “giving up one’s life for a brother or sister.” With a rich legacy of service and sacrifice to humanity, honoring. Dr. King at the beginning of each year is a humbling, yet necessary way to remind ourselves that justice and freedom remain very expensive, and that all humans from very race and creed are called to “fight the good fight of faith.” Dr. King’s life reminds us we are all connected, and that his dream is actually humanity’s dream. The fulfillment of Dr. King’s dream is a declaration confirming we create the world in which we live.
Happy Birthday Dr. King. Thank you for your service, and also for your family’s service and sacrifice.
