This is Mica @therecoveryarchive in conversation with @rachaelburnsphoto and @kika_perez_2015 for #FFConversation
Writing is incredibly important to my practice. It was my first love, & I’ll always consider myself a writer first, & a photographer second. My question of the day is: Does text inspire your work, and if so, how does it inform it?
These 3 images are from my 2017 Senior Portfolio “my mother is dying.” My mother was diagnosed with Stage 4 Occult Amorphic Metastatic Breast Cancer in 2016. Photography became a means of preserving her physically, as well as a means for me to cope. As we shared more & more sessions together, the project turned into something much more defiant - just like her. Because my mother is not the ideal cancer patient. She isn’t “learning” anything on her “cancer journey.” She is not “grateful” for this experience; she is impatient, resentful, dejected, & other forbidden emotions. But too often do others seek to co-opt her own narrative with artificial sentimentality, absolute recovery, and forced positivity into her narrative. Too often do they ignore the glaringly obvious truth: my mother is dying.
My mother is a writer, & I followed in her footsteps. From the very beginning, I knew the project would have a written element. After many sessions of talking with her, reviewing images and body changes, overhearing soft conversations and lamentations, noting her emotions between moments, & transcribing certain traumatic encounters, I poured her into my poetry. My mother’s words flowed through her mouth & into my fingertips, just as so many countless times my words flowed into hers. Our words are our love – a unique bond we share.
Of course seeing is still believing, & my mother’s unfathomable resilience (as well as her condition) had to be visualized in stark black and white. If her experience is photographed, it is more “real” – it cannot be denied, co-opted, or rewritten; the black & white is black & white. 🗣
Every design and business decision I make at Mad Honey Studio is a reflection of my love for our planet, and all the Mad Honeys making our world a better place. To make your world brighter and bolder, I'm offering 20% off my series of Healing Waters original paintings through the end of January.
