The upcoming musical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has decided to cast an overseas performer as Willy Wonka rather than drawing on the pool of amazing talent in Australia. (Why does a Willy Wonka even need to be white, male actor?)
We need an industry wide agreement to ensure a consistent process when engaging foreign artists to work on Australian musicals.

If you want a sustainable career, you’ve got to have good, professional habits. If you are a regularly working or auditioning actor, you’re flexing that muscle every day. But in between those auditions, it’s easy to think you have “nothing to rehearse for.” Stop. Don’t do that. Flex that muscle. Daily. Create a habit. Practice cold reading. Practice different accents. Try different genres or ideas. Or just read. But do it. Every damn day.
The actors booking the jobs are.
Don’t treat your next audition like a lottery. Treat it like the marathon you’ve been training for. Like most marathon runners, it won’t be your only shot or your last. Your career is a work in progress.
