Halfway up, and two hours in, I caught myself wondering if it was going to be worth it. The storm had left the trail covered in a layer of ice and freshly packed snow making the ascent just a tad bit difficult. But this view? This view was worth it.
If you’re wondering about the descent, let’s just say I was grateful he volunteered to hike down the camera equipment as I spent most of the hike on my butt or back. That ice was VICIOUS. 😂 #AndThereSheGoes
#siempretendremosvilladeleyva 🐧
A Himba woman sits outside her home in northern Namibia. Some people are super curious about the red coloring that Himba people use, which is made from butter and ochre and has many uses including sunscreen and bug repellant. She also covers her hair with it, and will re-do this style 3-4 times a year. The women in this village told me (through a translator) that the headpiece she is wearing is for beauty, though some items they wear have significance like marital status or if they have kids or not.⠀
When it comes to travel and interacting with people who have a different language and/or culture than you do, I hear from a lot of travelers who are afraid of messing up. They don’t want to say or do the wrong thing.⠀
Soooo… I just want to remind you that I am not special. I was not born knowing how to handle the nuances. My opinions on ethics and desire to learn about the complexities did not appear overnight… they were the results of trying, sometimes failing, and trying to do better.⠀
A couple of good ground rules I think you can apply anywhere:⠀
1. Ask permission⠀
2. If you wouldn’t do it at home, don’t do it there.⠀
3. It’s an exchange. Have a conversation (or at least an interaction).⠀
This is a huge topic and I try to talk about it frequently. What do you want to learn?
