My job, both as a personal trainer and counsellor, gives me a unique insight into just how much people have going on in their lives, heads and hearts.
It’s teaching me everyday that when we make mistakes or do or say things we regret, we don’t need to be shamed or scolded. We need compassion, patience and understanding.
The same is true for how we treat ourselves. When you’re afraid to take risks or make mistakes, be kind to yourself. Be gentle and encouraging, over critical.
That doesn’t mean you should let people walk all over you, or that you should give up on yourself. It means having and maintaining your boundaries and standards without needing to defend or attack.
You can get curious about someone else’s process without needing to tear them down.
You can get curious about your own process without tearing yourself down.
We’re complicated, yet simple creatures. We all need to be seen, understood, accepted, encouraged and loved... the challenge is figuring out what that means to each of us, because our individual understanding of each of those things is unique.
Find the strength to be gentle. It’s hard but you, your relationships and the world will be better for it ❤️

On another note: it’s been really nice being a little more relaxed with fitness. I have had the ability to focus so much more on business and I’ve really been enjoying that. Of course, I still am a pro & need to act like a pro in the off-season but my life isn’t consumed the way it is on prep so I’m taking full advantage to grow in other aspects of life right now. One of the biggest problems when it comes to pull-ups is that many people can't even do one. How can we start teaching technique when you have to wriggle around like a fish to even get your chin anywhere near the bar.
Today I'm going to go over how to start if you are struggling to do one or even if your max is under 5 Strict pull-ups.
A. Use negatives. Don't overdo these and do them all day long but set yourself a target. Say 15 pullups in one session. Then using either a bench or preferably jumping up to the bar. Hold yourself at the top for a second then lower yourself in 3-5 seconds. And repeat.
B. Isometrics. Jump up to the bar and hold yourself at the top position for as long as possible. Vary your grip with this. Overhand, underhand, wide, narrow grips. Set a time and aim to hit this in a session. For example 2 minutes+. You may only be able to hold yourself for 15 seconds so you will have to drop and repeat.
C. Assistance Exercises. Build your strength in other back movements such as Barbell Rows, one arm DB Rows, Landmine rows, Pulldowns with varying grips etc.To go along with this; aim to squeeze your shoulder blades together for 3 seconds to engage those back muscles you need to strengthen instead of using momentum.
D. Scaling. Finally one great way to build the required strength to complete a decent amount of pull-ups is to perform scaled exercises. Two of my favorites are using a strength band over the pullup bar to assist you and inverted rows.
