While the Phish community still reels from a shocking 11th hour Curveball cancellation, we look back to happier days this year at Merriweather Post Pavilion August 11 and 12 when Phish rolled in for two stellar nights.
Every Phish fan knows you can't miss a show at this venue. "Never miss a Sunday show" at Merriweather isn't just a saying, it's a t-shirt. And for good reason. This year's Sunday night blew our doors off as arguably the best show of the summer, and goes down as Elle's favorite Phish show so far (Sunday was her twelfth show since first seeing them at NYE MSG 2015-16). But first, Saturday night was an up and down affair. It contained a number of highlights, including Jim’s favorite, "Stash," the rare "Mercury," a ripping "Ghost," and a titanic set closing "Slave To The Traffic Light." But the show cut uncharacteristically short, with each set clocking in around one hour. Never ones to miss an opportunity to tease their faithful flock, Phish closed with a four song encore including "Martian Monster" with its repeated refrain: "your trip is short." With the "warm-up night" out of the way, we all knew Sunday would be a monster show. We were not disappointed. From start to finish, the band came to play, and delivered one of our favorite shows of the last several years. First set highlights rocked us with a thrilling "Tweezer" + "Bathtub Gin" combo, played together for the first time since 1993.
Second set carried on the "Tweezer" vibe, and Elle was in heaven with three versions of "Tweezer Reprise" sandwiching fiery versions of "Twist," "Piper," and "2001." There was only one choice to close set two, and the band delivered a soaring "Harry Hood" to end the weekend with a bang.
We know Phish isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but they are one of the most unique bands in music history, and continue to excel after 35 years together. So, let’s hear it, Phish fans! Let the rest of the world know why you love this band so much in the comments. We always love to hear what everyone’s favorite show is. For the record, Jim’s favorite attended show (out of nearly 70 so far) was 12/31/95.
And who's gonna be at MSG for New Year's with us?!
Is this even real!? Can’t believe its only a matter of days until we get to witness @kamasiwashington LIVE in Singapore!
Don’t miss out on one of the more important artists of his generation this Thursday.
