And why tf not? Reading @joanmorgan#SheBegatThis and enjoying @thehomegirlbox treats got me going down memory lane.
I started my dreads/locs/dreadlocks when I was in high school, during junior year (Ay Dios! babyface me when you swipe left). Not a big deal for my family and friends (mostly Caribbean so locs were not new to them, although a few wondered if I was going Rasta). A couple years later, I landed into a different world (no pun intended) - Hampton, Virginia. Within days, I heard a range of affirming remarks, questions and some of the most obscene commentary (even this woman trying to touch my hair in the mall...my eyes warned her and her daughter saved her....can’t go by an Aunt Annie’s without thinking about that. Lawd. 🤷🏾♀️) Interestingly, while on an Honors College road trip, our crew of #Hamptonians stopped at a chicken and chitlings shack for a meal. As I went up to order, I heard someone announce to folks in the kitchen —
“She got hair just like Lauryn Hill!!”
YALL!! 🤣 It was the first time a stranger hadn’t compared my hair to Bob Marley (respect) in E-V-A!! I spent time talking to the two women in the kitchen who had been looking at, questioning and admiring my hair (til I realized one of them was cleaning chitlings 😳...then I carried my lil self to my table to eat chicken, a biscuit, greens and a scoop of peach cobbler). That the reference point to my locs for these two southern black women in their late 40s, maybe 50s (you know melanin) was Lauryn was BIG.
Complicated. Complete. Talented. Deep. Messy. Middle-class righteous teacher. Whatever about time. Serious about music. Lauryn Hill.

Paging all DMV #Hamptonians! If you don’t have plans for tonight, make your way down U Street to support one of our very own, Trayonna Hendricks (Onyx 10), and the Hampton Roads cast of “Can A Woman Raise A Man”. This production was the first African American play to go up on the Las Vegas strip and tonight is the last show on the east coast. So be sure to grab a ticket, maybe a snack from Ben’s Chili Bowl and enjoy the show.
I was blessed to not only see my sister friend in action as a principle actress but blessed to be in the presence of an amazing cast full of talent and worship. Go get your blessing today! #KatchKhanner#CanAWomanRaiseAMan
