Halloween 3: Season of the Witch is directed by Tommy Lee Wallace and stars Tom Atkins and Stacy Nelkins as a doctor tries to help a young woman uncover the mystery behind her father's murder, by investigating a nearby Halloween mask factory. Now I haven't seen this one since I was very young and fresh into my Halloween fandom. And at the time, I hated it, mostly because of the obvious disappointment of it not having the star, Michael Myers, but also because it was just a weird story and different from anything I've seen before. In the past few years, I've read and seen the hype for this movie start to come up repeatedly, so I decided to give it another shot.
My biggest takeaway here, is that it's definitely not as bad as I made it out to be at the time and viewed as a standalone in the franchise, it's a fun, watchable horror film. Is it perfect? No, but it has enough good qualities for me to officially take it off my horror purgatory list. The thing I like the most about this film is wildly creepy mood and atmosphere. Combine this with the Carpenter score and you have a movie that feels like it belongs in the Halloween universe, without being directly linked to the Myers storyline. The story here is also extremely dark, possibly the worst of any film I've seen. The thought of killing an entire population of children with a Halloween mask and then actually watching it play out in front of a child's parents, is so unnerving to watch and think about. I also really love the sci-fi elements they try to introduce here and I think they work very well in this particular story. The performances here though, are not the best and easily the weakest thing in this film. Atkins is a decent leading man, but Nelkins is just bad. She's just bland and boring the whole time and even though that may be explained by the twist, it still doesn't excuse it for me.
Overall, I'm glad I gave this one another chance, because there is some really good horror elements wrapped up in this little Halloween one off. It's not my favorite of the series by far, but it serves its purpose as an interesting new direction for the series, even if they went nowhere with it.
SCORE - 7.25/10
