Today’s Inspiration: Arnold Scaasi
Arnold Scaasi ( born Arnold Isaacs) was a Canadian Jewish fashion designer who was born in 1930. ‘Scaasi’ is ‘Isaacs’ spelled backwards. He began his design training in Montreal at the Cotnoir-Capponi School of Design. He also trained at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture Parisienne in Paris. He was an apprentice at the House of Paquin (see past post) in Paris before relocating to New York City where he worked for Charles James (see past post). By 1950 Scaasi’s designs were being worn in national ad campaigns run by major corporations. In 1955 he design first graced the cover of Vogue Magazine. He was awarded a Coty Fashion Critic’s Award in 1958.
By the early 1960’s, affordable fashion was becoming a world-wide trend. Options (in terms of price point) began to appear that had never previously been seen. Scaasi went the opposite direction- in 1964 he opened his House/Salon and was known for his decadent cocktail and evening wear, designs that dripped with beads, sequins, embroidery or feathers.
Barbra Streisand, Mamie Eisenhower, Barbara Bush, Hillary Clinton, and Laura Bush, Joan Crawford, Lauren Bacall, Elizabeth Taylor, Catherine Deneuve, Brooke Astor, Arlene Francis, and Mary Tyler Moore, Shirley MacLaine, Susan Sarandon, and Sally Field were all clients.
Scaasi was awarded the Council of Fashion Designers of America Lifetime Achievement Award in 1996. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• #ArnoldScaasi#Scaasi#CanadianFashion#ChambreSyndicale#CanadianStyle#CocktailDress#EveningGown#CotyAward#Classic#Vogue#CFDA#FormalWear#Gown#DressHistory#Suit#CotyAward#FashionDesigner#FashionHistory#CostumeHistory#CostumeDesign#WhatWeWore#HistoryOfDress#WomensWear#MadeToMeasure#Atelier#Bespoke#TodaysInspiration
