‘Why am I looking at a purple doormat?’ we hear you ponder. Well because our purple doormats at the Crucible entrance are just one of the many things we’ve put in place to be the best #DementiaFriendly venue we can.
Our doormats used to be black which, to a person living with Dementia, can appear to be a black hole in the ground. Certainly not the impression we want when coming into our venue. So, we swapped them for these lovely dementia friendly (and on brand) purple mats.
Just one of the steps we’ve taken to fulfill our dementia friendly status (as well as training our staff, casts and creative teams) and, whilst we know there’s still more to take, we’re proud to be heading in the right direction. Because we at Sheffield Theatres wholeheartedly believe in providing a warm welcome to all.

Gorgeous artwork created using bleeding tissue paper technique and bird stencils, by a resident at Greys Residential Home in Woking. The art created in this session is part of our 'Everyone Has A Voice' (EHAV) initiative launched as part of Dementia Action Week (DAW) this week.
We launched the EHAV initiative to highlight that those with dementia are individuals and have a 'voice' even if they're not able to verbally express it.
The majority of the 1500 older people we work with have dementia at various stages and the initiative is a way of saying I'm me, respect my choices and needs, please listen. The silhouette birds singing symbolise this sentiment and it's a poignant way for us to raise awareness of dementia.

It’s Dementia Action Week and we've been working with Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub, a new dementia-friendly leisure centre! Our residents thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a little taster of exercise from the Stay on Your Feet programme! #DAW2018#DementiaActionWeek#socialcare
Just doing the finishing touches on these 5 sensory cushions and then they will be ready for a trip to the post office! Any messages that I receive from now will be answered on Monday, have a great weekend everyone! x
E is for EDUCATE... Our concierge at Quayside in Totnes, Karen has pledged to spread the word and knowledge of Dementia to friends and family who may benefit from the information.
Karen says “I believe that being a dementia friend is really important and what it means to me is that I have a better understanding of Dementia and people who live with this condition.
My father in law passed away some years ago after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s.
This was a difficult time for the family as we did not understand what this condition was or meant. In his last days he became very aggressive as didn’t know who we was and unbeknown to us this was a part of the Dementia. Understandably very upsetting for all.
Since then there has been more awareness and training offered to families and friends and this is paramount to the understanding of Dementia.”
Day 5 Dementia Awareness Week -- #manis4dementiaawareness#daw2018 Please use hashtag to spread awareness. Thanks again to Amanda @thenailpolishhound for organizing the themes and information.
I don't have any plates with the ribbon and I'm not really good at freehand but tried my best. 🙈🙈

A rather relevant #DAW2018 Action from Alzheimer's Society for a #ThrowbackThursday to when we first decided to create a show about dementia.
We didn't know much about it, but we knew it was an important subject.
We spent years researching, meeting people living with it and speaking with their carers - we even lived with those people and their carers for a few days. We've learnt so much over the past 7/8 years, but that's only because we asked questions and been kindly and patiently informed by the people living with dementia in their lives day to day.
We now attend dementia conferences as guest speakers, train the NHS and care staff, and inspire young people to be carers - we are pretty proud of all that. Still, there are things we don't know, and things we'll continue to learn, and share.

“I feel like I’ve come so far in this job. It’s the little things that make you feel proud. One of the best things is seeing patients up and about, when you know that they hadn’t been out of bed for a long time. Knowing you’re part of the team that made that happen is a great feeling. Some of our patients have advanced dementia and aren’t able to communicate very well, so it means so much more when they reach out and say thank you.
I’ve also been the face of the digital campaign that has so far recruited seven new nurses to the medicine for the elderly ward.”

‘Pimp the Zimmer’ was in full swing at Tilsley House in Weston Super Mare (WSM). The residents had lots of fun pimping their frames with individual themes in preparation for the first WSM care home Pimp the Zimmer competition! The competition is to be held tomorrow as part of their Dementia Awareness Garden Party. Everyone was thrilled with their frames and can't wait to show them off to relatives and visitors! 😊👌 #DAW2018
Art Session by Susannah, CM Artist based in WSM
We made two pledges for Dementia Action Week; to raise awareness and to donate what we could to Alzheimer’s.org to help we got some memory games in for some mental stimulation in our breaks. #DAW2018#badgerlife

Dementia Awareness Week🧠: A lot of people I know have family members living with dementia, so know how sad it can be. Even though Gramp doesn’t always know my name, he loves to see my face and hold my hand. So important to spend time with him on the funny days and the sad days, even if he can’t remember we’ve been to visit. It can be so hard seeing someone you love trapped in a mind that no longer works the way it used to. 💓💐 #daw2018#dementiaawareness#dementiaweek

G is for Giving... Natalie is our Senior Care Enabler at Hanover Court and has pledged to continue giving support to staff and customers, whilst spreading awareness.
Here Natalie tells us about her #MyPledge Journey, “I attended a @dementia_friends session in 2015 because I think it is one of the most important things you can do, it gives you a better understanding and knowledge to be able to support individuals appropriately.
I’m very passionate about raising awareness, including funds for dementia charities because of my personal experiences with dementia. It can be a very difficult journey which can be made a little easier with better understanding and knowledge.
I try to support our customers by ensuring their care plan is person centred and suited to their needs. Within their care plan I include their favourite foods and memories that customers may find comfort in talking about.”
"just because I won't remember today doesn't mean that today didn't matter" my favourite line from the wonderful book still alice. Still inspired by your love of life Grandad ❤️ #DAW2018#dementiaawareness
