If you’re going to lift heavy, make sure you’re checking off all the necessary boxes so you don’t injure yourself (PS: I didn’t practice what I preached and am recovery from the above weight of a 375lb partial deadlift). I hit a 365lb PR, 10 over my original, only to feel a bit risk-ay, and went for a 375. I barely got the weight off the ground when I felt a sharp pull in my lower back, resulting in my very short lower body session. Take note of my mistakes so you can prepare yourself for you own personal goals: leave the ego at the door. Lift what you know you can lift!

Battleground for today’s @crossfitlinchpin WOD.
While I usually keep my intensity level just outside my comfort zone, I decided that today was the perfect opportunity to GO BONKERS.
I applied various lessons I’ve been learning about the nervous system from @strongfit1, @sealfit, @powerspeedendurance, @oxygenadvantage and @neurohackercollective .
1. Anticipate the emotional impact of intensity. Surprise, it feels bad! High intensity workouts trigger emotions associated with life-or-death struggle, through Sympathetic Nervous System engagement. Surviving fight/flight from a bear leaves us with a feeling of dread, to make sure we avoid the bear next time. Accept this ahead of time.
2. Establish set points to call off the intensity. I planned to stop the workout if I lost the ability to brace my low back on the deadlifts, or experienced tunnel vision. Otherwise, keep going! Here’s where having a coach or training partner really pays off; someone to pull the plug if you become unsafe.
3. Visualize difficulty as a necessary part of the process toward a goal. Wanting to learn to embrace hardship for my family’s sake makes the suffering productive. I kept my daughters’ chalk-drawings at the edge of my lifting area to remind me. Keeping the deeper “Why” in mind lets me flip the metaphor, now I’m chasing the bear. #itswhatsfordinner !
4. Purposefully recover. I immediately stand tall, begin to control my breathing, and smile. I also generate a little internal torque by hugging one of the beams holding up my house. (It’s not weird, don’t make it weird.) The intent is to stimulate Parasympathetic Nervous System to maximize recovery in the rest interval.
End result: max #RelativeIntensity for me today, #RestDayTomorrow !
Let’s talk about alignment.
When we are doing things that go against who we are, who we want to be, we are out of alignment.
And holyyy SHIT will we feel it when we’re out of alignment.
It might show up in self doubt.
Waking up and feeling uninspired / not creative.
More negative thoughts than positive.
Feelings of uncertainty about what’s coming next in life.
Being afraid of outcomes.
Being in alignment takes boundary setting. It takes us surrounding ourselves with people that bring out and accept our authentic selves. It takes checking in with ourselves regularly, looking at our environment, career, significant other, friends, family, any type of surroundings that may be pushing us out of alignment or triggering those feelings of disapproval.
Recently I found that my feeling of being out of alignment was because I was working mostly with aesthetic based clients. I love helping people get to their aesthetic goals— but it doesn’t set me on fire. It doesn’t bring out my passion — which is fixing our relationship with ourselves and what we put on our plate.
In the next few weeks you’ll see a few new coaches that I’ve hired over at @functionalnutritionfitness . They’re passionate about performance and aesthetics and they are going to be extremely helpful in offering coaching services to those who have been on a wait list.
Making this next step is crucial for me to continue feeling aligned, while also offering everything I could’ve ever dreamed of in my business. I cannot thank ALL of you for supporting me every step of the way I wish I could express how much it means to me and FNF.
