I never wanted a Cavalier! I work in the veterinary field and Cavaliers are known for their health issues. However I loved the breed and their amazing personalities and temperament.
I get asked daily about where we got him because he is adorable. While I love to share my information I always start by talking about the health issues the breed is prone too. It’s not exactly what people want to hear when they ask about your cute puppy but that is the reality of this breed I love. .
One of the breed issues is a genetic disease called Syringomyelia a painful condition in which the spinal cord is progressively damaged. Almost all Cavaliers have the skull malformation but the degree of the malformation varies. Currently it is recommended to use MRI scans to grade the amount of skull malformation for every breeding pair in Cavaliers. Yet the prevalence of the malformation and research backed protocol are often ignored. .
While there is no guarantee with health testing that the offspring will avoid those health issues... it has become common practice to expect breeders to health test for the many other diseases Cavaliers face. However the vast majority of breeders do not include MRI scans as part of their breeding protocol. While many offer their reasons for not including this crucial health test... often cost is a major factor. There are many low cost ways to do health testing for most the Cavalier health concerns... however access to low cost MRI testing is difficult to nonexistent at this time.
It is because of this I was grateful to find a breeder locally that did MRI scans of their dogs. I wanted to take the first steps in being a responsible dog mom by giving Rowan the best chance at a long happy and healthy life. Which included supporting a responsible breeder. It comes down to responsibility and doing your research to avoid supporting irresponsible rescues and breeders. Good intentions do not equal responsibility.
February is Responsible Pet Owners Month so @gooddog is donating $1 for every #tellyourtail to @americasvetdogs who train and place service dogs for veterans. If you join the #gooddogpack let me know so I can give you a story shoutout!
