Setsubun is an ‘eve’ celebration of the lunar new year. Traditionally, people in Japan throw soy beans chanting ‘Oni wa Soto, Fuku wa uchi’ meaning out with the ogre (evil) and in with the luck. In Kyoto and many of the night entertainment districts, an ‘Obake’ meaning ‘ghost or demon’ celebration is held, and the Maiko and Geiko of the Hanamachi or entertainment areas dress in costume, and perform various skits, dance and comedy , usually not allowed by the Geiko and Maiko who are meant to be elegant and poised. They say this tradition dates back to Edo period some 300-400 years ago. Of course, the Obake in Gion, the most popular and prestigious Hanamachi, is the most elaborate. This event is SO very closed to the most exclusive of the patrons, that most Japanese would never know the existence of such event. This day of celebration is the most elaborate, fun and exiting day to go to a tea house, but also the most difficult evening to secure a banquet room, as the patrons of the teahouses book this day for generations. This year, I had been lucky to secure a room, and invite our clients and partners to this very exclusive closed door event! I’ve attached some clips of the various ‘obake’ or groups of Geiko that perform the skits, but they start from performing an act (from Kabuki or other stories) that quickly evolve to a comedy skit. There were 5 obake this year, and we saw 4 plus a few traditional Maiko and Geiko dance. Ohatsugama is the first tea ceremony of the year, and a celebratory annual event that marks the first time the ‘kama’ or ‘kettle’ is put into the ‘Ro’ or dug out furnace. It’s a special day for us, as we get dressed in Kimono to celebrate this day. The Ebisu Jinja shrines spread across the country, are shrines offered to the Gods of business and prosperity. The ‘Kyoto Ebisu Taisai’ or the Grand Ebisu Festival in Kyoto is a festival held 1/8-1/12 to offer prayers for a prosperous year, and also to receive the Fukuzasa or Kumanote, decorations thought to bring luck to the home or business. The Fukuzasa is bamboo leaves blessed by the Gods, hung with your selection of charms called ‘Kiccho’, similar to Christmas trees. The Kyoto Ebisu Shrine is said to have been the start of the Fukuzasa, over 400 years ago! I was lucky to get my Fukuzasa, and purchased 10 charms to be hung. Jan 7 is the day to have Nanakusa Gayu (seven herb rice porridge) for breakfast. Traditionally, Japan’s new year feast lasts for three days (1/1-1/3) and onwards. So on the morning of the 7th, the herbs are cooked in a simple dashi broth with rice, and the porridge is served to rest the stomach and help it recover from the new year indulgence. Happy New Year 2019!! Japanese New Year is as important a celebration as Christmas is to the west, and we all spend days cleaning the house, and preparing the Osechi Ryori, a celebratory meal we traditionally have for the first 3 days of the year. The family gathered at our house for the first meal of the year, with Otoso (sweetened sake for new year toast), Osechi and Ozoni (the new year soup) I prepared the Ozoni as well as 4 types of roast beef and pork, while my sister and mom prepared some of the other dishes. Year end in Japan is an important time to visit and thank the clients, partners and suppliers that helped us through the year, so the last few weeks were busy going around greeting various people. The beautiful restaurant Jisaku was all prepared to welcome the new year with its Sake barrel decorations! The restaurant helped us pull off a few large events, client dinners, and the filming of a TV documentary called Miraiseiki Jipangu. Thank you to all who helped us get through 2018.
