How’s this for island life? Shot this on my last morning in Hawaii, a place I used to look down on visiting because 1.) it’s generally more expensive than many other locations globally 2.) culturally it isn’t much of a change from the rest of the US (obviously) 3.) it’s expensive to get to with miles and/or money and availability is really hard to find. But after my trip, my opinion changed because 1.) it’s so damn beautiful and the water is so warm and blue 2.) sure, it’s not much of a cultural experience, but you know what, sometimes it’s nice to travel and not have to adopt a different way of living, tipping, or relating to people 3.) it wasn’t that long of a flight from the US and they do have flat beds on some first classes! I spent the whole time on Oahu, but I would love to go back and see some of the other islands. If you read the whole way to the end, expect a video from this trip in a few weeks of me swimming in the open ocean with sharks 🦈 lol. Happy Friday, enjoy the weekend!

Tips for surviving the middle seat: Assert dominance over the arm rests early, sit between two of the best looking people on the plane and fly business class. Shoutout to anyone who figures out which Ian was actually in this photo 😏 Also, that’s a joke, there’s no surviving the middle seat.

LINK IN BIO for full video. Pretty crazy to be floating down into one of these little canyons supported by nothing but a wicker basket and a huge bag of hot air. We drifted in and out of several of these canyons, at times coming within a few feet of the rock, seems crazy to me having no knowledge of how to fly a hot air balloon, but there’s a ton of finesse to it. Did you know 80% of all hot air balloon flights in the world take place in @cappadocia and @goreme? They fly about 150 balloons at a time on the days that the weather allows. Have you ever been on a hot air balloon?

Regis is growing up quick! Swipe 👉 to see how tiny she was 3 months ago. Also, I got new art since the first photo was taken. It’s a piece of carpet from PDX, that airport is where my passion for travel really set in and it’s nice to have a piece of where I grew up in my office. Finally, @adobe#plsfix premiere, thanks 🌈 💀

I’ve had it with these steaks on these planes!!! I don’t know if @samuelljackson would agree, but I’m always disappointed by in flight steaks (and snakes), though I still order them from time to time for #firstclassfriday research, of course. Hoping you guys get the reference, otherwise you’re probably very, very confused lol 🐍

Everywhere you look in Cappadocia, you can find these rock spires called fairy chimneys (the local term, not mine 🤔), but what’s even crazier than the structures themselves is the fact that people used to live inside them! If you swipe to the next photo you can see a large room carved out of the spire I hiked to. It’s hard to imagine how much different life would have been for someone who called that their home 🤯 Shot on GoPro Fusion, both photos were taken from the same 360 image.

Every weather permitting day of the year in #Cappadocia , 150 hot air balloons fill the sky over a martian landscape. Of course, for 2/3 of my mornings in town the weather did not permit, but that just makes for a better story. The morning of the flight, I overheard a Chinese couple decline, what I assumed to be, the last open seat on any balloon flying that morning. I booked it by giving a Turkish stranger all of the cash in my wallet, no receipt, just a handshake. With one previous hot air balloon flight on my record, what I found to be so unique about the flying experience here was our proximity to the ground and the aptly named fairy chimneys, sometimes silently drifting just a few feet over ridges or next to curiously shaped rock spires 🍆, it’s definitely a top 5 travel experience for me that I’d recommend to anyone. Some might say it was lucky, but after three mornings in a row getting up to try and film the balloons at sunrise, I think I earned the right to be lucky 🎈🧿

Here’s something @Lufthansa completely nailed in their first class product: the bed. Personally, I rate the ability to sleep as the single most important element of a premium cabin experience, if you can’t sleep comfortably, there’s no reason to spend the extra miles or money for some complimentary reheated meals and priority boarding. On the topic of first world comforts, let’s talk about a few first world problems. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve flown in a business or first class seat and when it came time to sleep, been too hot to do so. For reasons unbeknownst to me, many airlines don’t have personal air vents in business or first class, making it hard to regulate your temperature, but what you might not know is that you can ask a flight attendant to change the cabin temperature and I typically notice the change take effect quickly. Many airlines keep their cabins on the warm side, then give you a blanket and sometimes pajamas, completely erasing any possibility of sleeping comfortably. As you can see in the photo, Lufthansa gives first class passengers a thick comforter (as well as pajamas and a mattress pad), so I was worried sleeping would be impossible, but as the flight attendant made up my bed she asked me if the cabin temperature was ok for sleeping and I asked her to cool it down, which did the trick and I ended up sleeping 6 uninterrupted hours in a properly cozy bed. Whether you’re flying in economy, business, or first on your next long haul flight, I hope you can use this trick. Is sleeping most important to you or is there something else you value more?

The diversity of beauty here on earth is something special and I wanted to highlight that on #earthday . Here in Sri Lanka you can see the Island’s highest peak in the distance (Adam’s peak) rising above the jungle and tea fields below. Having been to many corners of this planet I think it’s also undeniable that the planet is changing and we all have a huge responsibility to take care of our environment so we still have one to explore! What little things have you done to reduce your impact? Jessie and I have drastically cut our single use plastics by refusing straws, plastic cutlery, cups and tableware. We no longer use single use plastic bags in our house and have also tried to reduce our meat intake, particularly red meat, the production of which has the biggest effect on the environment. Let me know what you’re doing and I’ll post some of my favorites in my story. If you’re not doing anything, I hope you get inspired to do so!

I’ve teamed up with @appintheair and they are running a contest where consumers who download the app and create an App in the Air account through the end of today (eastern time) will be entered to win a $2500 cash prize or several runner-up prizes such as Away luggage and Bose noise cancelling headphones. The app makes it easy to juggle multiple trips, keeping track of all itineraries (past, present and future); boarding passes; and frequent-flier programs connected to a user’s email from across all airlines. Users can track their boarding and landing times, receive real-time updates for delays, wait times for check-in and security, and even allow users to check if their carry-on meets airline dimensions standards with an augmented reality tool. Gotta say, they’ve done a good job with the app and it is very helpful when traveling, especially on multi-leg itineraries. Plus this AR globe animation is super cool.

I fly my drone so much for video that I often forget to take photos, but managed to snag both on this flight And now I have a new desktop background. As beautiful as the beaches are in the Bahamas, I think being up above them is even better. Swipe 👉 over to the video and make sure you turn on your sound!
